ASHLAND, VA-Randolph-Macon Baseball picked up two ODAC wins
after sweeping Eastern Mennonite University 12-2 and 14-7 in
Ashland Sunday. The Yellow Jackets improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0
in the ODAC.
Eastern Mennonite took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game
one after Chris Harpine hit an RBI double to right. Harpine scored
later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Smith.
Randolph-Macon starting pitcher Kyle Hicks (Goochland, VA/
Goochland) settled in after the first inning, allowing no runs and
just one hit for the remainder of the game.
The Yellow Jackets' bats came to life in the bottom of the
second. Jordan Walton (Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee-Davis) and Cory
Jackson (Beaverdam, VA/ PH-Ashland) started the inning with
singles, Walton scored on an RBI ground out by Adam Carpenter
(Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin). Brian Jordan (Columbia, VA/
Goochland) followed with an RBI double to right and two batters
later, Kevin Davis (Hanover, VA/ Hanover) plated Jay Lichter
(Richmond, VA/ Varina) with a single.
R-MC sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the
fourth, resulting in seven runs on five hits and four walks. Walton
highlighted the inning with a two run double to right center. Jeb
Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover), Greg Mitro (Richmond, VA/ Mills
Godwin), and Carpenter all chipped in with RBI singles.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more runs in the fifth to pull
away for the 12-2 victory.
Mitro finished game one with three hits and two RBI while Walton
went two for three with a double, a walk, and two RBI.
Hicks (2-0) picked up his second win of the season,
striking out five in six innings of work. Freshman Michael Helbig
(Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) struck out three in his one inning of
relief.
Michael Moles is stuck with the loss after giving
up seven runs on six hits.
In game two the Royals jumped to a 4-0 first inning lead, three
runs coming off of a Harpine homerun to right.
Randolph-Macon responded with two runs in the bottom half when
James Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) doubled home Davis and
Mitro.
Harpine went deep again in the second inning, this time for a
two run shot that gave EMU a 6-2 advantage.
R-MC rallied for three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a
two run single from Jordan.
The Royals pushed across one run in the fourth to go up 7-5
before Yellow Jackets' reliever Haile Lytton (Mechanicsville, VA/
Hanover) and the R-MC defense got out of a one out bases loaded jam
to end the inning.
Lichter led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and later
scored on a base hit by Weymouth. With one on and two out, Mitro
belted a homerun left center giving R-MC an 8-7 advantage.
Jackson's RBI single capped the four run inning that put
Randolph-Macon ahead 9-7.
The Yellow Jackets scored one in the fifth on a Lichter solo
homerun and four runs in the sixth to put the Royals away 14-7.
Game two ended after the sixth inning due to darkness.
Lytton (1-0) earns the win in relief for RMC while EMU starter
Andy Richter picks up the loss after allowing nine runs on eight
hits in three and two thirds innings. Bierlein closed the door for
a two inning save, allowing no runs and no hits.
EMU's Harpine had a two for two game with two homeruns, five RBI
and two walks. Lichter led RMC with three hits, a homerun, two RBI
and a walk.
Randolph-Macon Baseball returns to the field Tuesday, March
2nd, when they host York College for a 2:30 game.
