ASHLAND, VA - The Randolph-Macon Men's Lacrosse team opened up
the 2010 season with a 15-13 victory over Wesley College on Sunday
afternoon.
Tyler Midwinter who had four goals and two assists for six
points on the afternoon led Randolph-Macon in scoring.
Goalkeeper Jason Crawford turned away 14 shots on the day,
including key saves in the closing minutes. Patrick Egan and
Jake Leddy each had three goals for R-MC (1-0), while Billy Rowe
and Kevin Patton each had a pair of strikes in the win.
Wesley (0-1) opened up the scoring three minutes into the game
when Justin D'Alonzo scored the game's first goal. R-MC then
tallied two goals from Midwinter and Connor Barnes to take a
one-goal lead.
The Wolverines then scored four of the next five goals, taking a
5-3 lead when Jack Skeels scored with 11:27 to go in the
first half.
After the teams exchanged goals to make the score 6-4, R-MC got
two goal from Leddy and single e scores from Rowe and Eagan to head
to the intermission with an 8-6 advantage.
Wesley opened the second stanza with a goal to cut the R-MC lead
to 8-7 before the Jackets reeled off five of the final six
goals of the quarter, taking a 13-8 lead when Midwinter struck at
the 1:27 mark.
Back-to-back goals by Brad Smith to open the final quarter cut
the R-MC lead to 13-10 before a Patton goal with just over 10
minutes to play made it 14-10.
Wesley was able to score two goals in the four minutes to pull
within two at 15-13, but Crawford made several key stops down the
stretch to preserve the victory.
Wesley out shot R-MC 45-38 and held a 37-28 edge in ground
balls.
Randolph-Macon will return to action March 10th when
it hosts Shenandoah at 3:30 p.m. in Ashland.
