ROCKY MOUNT, NC-R-MC Baseball junior Greg Mitro had three hits,
a homerun and four RBI but North Carolina Wesleyan overcame the
Yellow Jackets 19-9 in Rocky Mount Friday.
The Bishops scored eight runs over the first three innings,
highlighted by a solo homerun from J.J. Allen to start the bottom
of the second. NCWC tacked on two more runs in the fifth to go up
10-0.
Cory Jackson (Beaverdam, VA/ PH-Ashland) and Jay Lichter
(Richmond, VA/Varina) had an RBI single each in the top of the
sixth to get the Yellow Jackets on the board.
Brain Allen capped a five run sixth for North Carolina Wesleyan
with a two run single to centerfield, putting the Bishops up 15-2.
Randolph-Macon pushed across a run in the seventh when Lichter
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. With one on in the top of
the eighth, Mitro (Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) went deep for his
second homerun of the season. Jackson doubled home Jordan Walton
(Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee-Davis) later in the inning.
Mitro singled home two more runs in the ninth and Walton had a
sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 19-9. The Bishops pitching
settled in to close out the ninth and take the 19-9 win.
Kevin Davis (Hanover, VA/ Hanover) and Jackson had two hits
each; Jackson also had a double and two RBI. Matt Tiller
(Midlothian, VA/ Clover Hill) picks up the loss after allowing four
runs in two innings with a strikeout.
Daniel Moore paced the Bishops with a three for four day
including a double and two RBI. Jimmy Martin earns the win, giving
up no runs in five innings of work.
The Yellow Jackets will host Eastern Mennonite for a
doubleheader Sunday, February 28th. First pitch is
slated for noon.
