Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-Maggie Roy poured in 19 points including a
three for three mark from the three point line as Randolph-Macon
Women's Basketball held off Virginia Wesleyan 61-58 in Virginia
Beach Saturday. Molly Ariail recorded her 10th
double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds as the Yellow Jackets
improved to 12-3 (10-1 ODAC) on the season.
With the Marlins up 2-0 early in the first half, Roy (Richmond,
VA/ Mills Godwin) knocked down a two point jumper to spark a 14-2
run that was capped by Taylor Wieczorek (Grasonville, MD/ Severn)
when she converted a free throw on a three point play.
Rachael Miller pulled Virginia Wesleyan within four when she
scored a three pointer with 10:41 to play in the first stanza and
the score 14-10.
Molly Brown (Floyd, VA/ Floyd County) pushed the Yellow Jackets'
lead to 11 with a minute to go when she hit a two. VWC cut the lead
down to nine just before halftime, making the score 29-20 R-MC.
The Marlins came out of the intermission firing and cut the R-MC
advantage to 37-34 with 13:23 to play when Jocelyn Spencer hit a
three to cap an 8-0 VWC run.
Roy answered back with a three of her own two minutes later to
begin a 13-3 Randolph-Macon run capped by a Wieczorek jumper with
6:31 to go, giving R-MC their biggest lead of the game 50-37.
Virginia Wesleyan turned the tables on Randolph-Macon with a
13-3 run of their own to make the score 53-50 in favor of the
Yellow Jackets with 3:20 remaining.
Jennifer O'Briant (Chesterfield, VA/ Manchester) converted a
free throw to push the R-MC lead to 59-52 with 2:41 left.
VWC guard Kristina Jameson knocked down a three with under a
minute to play, capping a 6-0 run to pull the Marlins to within one
at 59-58.
On the following Virginia Wesleyan possession, Brown came up
with a clutch steal for Randolph-Macon, resulting in a layup for
Ariail (York, PA/ York Suburban) to put the Yellow Jackets up 61-58
which would hold to be the final.
Randolph-Macon held a 54-39 rebounding advantage in the win
while also shooting 66.7% from beyond the arc. Roy led all scorers
with 19 points; Ariail also reached double figures with 18 points
and 18 rebounds.
Tonia Jones paced Virginia Wesleyan with 14 points and five
steals.
