Courtney Brooks Slams Walk-Off Homer as R-MC Splits
Doubleheader with Randolph
(Game One
Box) / (Game Two
Box)
ASHLAND, Va. - R-MC senior pitcher Courtney Brooks nailed
her first career homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning that
sealed a 3-2 Yellow Jacket win against Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) rival Randolph College on Thursday. The two-run
blast earned R-MC the victory in the first game of the
doubleheader. The WildCats took the second game 6-1.
Randolph (18-12, 8-10 ODAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead when pitcher
Teresa Dalton hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning of game one.
Randolph-Macon (13-13, 7-8 ODAC) tallied its first run of the day
when third baseman Paige Smith hit a two-run single and first
baseman Laura Bauer followed by droving her in with an RBI double.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh inning, R-MC shortstop Shannon Long
nailed a leadoff double. After right fielder Krystal Kellum popped
out, Brooks stepped to the plate with the tying run in scoring
position. She would do more than just tie the game as she sent the
Randolph pitch over the outfield fence for the game-winning
walk-off homerun.
Brooks not only won the game for R-MC with her bat, but also
pitched seven innings while allowing just two runs and striking out
four batters to pick up the win. Randolph's Teresa Dalton allowed
three runs and struck out two batters in the loss while hitting a
two-run homer of her own.
R-MC carried its momentum into game two as third baseman Paige
Smith hit a first inning solo homerun. However, that would be the
lone Yellow Jacket run as the WildCats crossed the plate in the
second and fourth innings to build a 2-1 lead entering the seventh
frame. Randolph then tallied four runs on six hits and two R-MC
errors in the final inning. WildCat hurler Teresa Dalton retired
the R-MC side in the bottom of the inning to seal the Randolph
victory.
Randolph first baseman Lindsay Cross and center fielder Lauren
Siko both registered two hits for the WildCats. In Dalton's second
outing of the day, she yielded just one run and four hits in seven
innings of work. She combined for eight strikeouts and allowed just
four runs in more than 13 innings of work. R-MC's Christi Wise
struck out four WildCat batters in the complete-game loss.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, April 14 when
they travel to Mary Baldwin for a doubleheader. First pitch is
slated for 3 pm.
