ASHLAND, Va. - R-MC scored a game-tying goal with one
second remaining in regulation, then netted the winning tally two
minutes into overtime to pick up a nonconference win against
Christopher Newport on Wednesday. Freshman Patrick Egan registered
three goals and three assists while classmate Tyler Midwinter
scored four goals for R-MC.
Wednesday's contest proved to be a seesaw battle for the first
three quarters as neither team could build more than a one-goal
lead. The score was tied six times in the first forty-five minutes
of regulation. CNU (6-5) ended the third quarter with two
consecutive tallies, including the go-ahead goal with one second
remaining, to give the Captains an 8-7 lead entering the fourth
quarter.
CNU continued its scoring run, netting two more to build a 10-7
lead with 9:16 remaining in regulation. R-MC (5-5, 0-3 ODAC)
responded by scoring three consecutive goals as Rich Wilkens,
Patrick Egan, and Tyler Midwinter found the back of the net. The
Yellow Jackets gained possession of the ball with little more than
two-and-a-half minutes remaining and the score knotted 10-10.
However, an R-MC turnover allowed CNU's Matt Gleisner to put his
team ahead 11-10 with just 33 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing faceoff, R-MC midfielder JR Sander picked up his
tenth ground ball of the day to give the ball to the Yellow Jacket
offense. Egan found Midwinter, whose goal with just one second
remaining in regulation extended the game. CNU never had possession
in overtime, as Sander won his twelfth faceoff to give R-MC another
possession. Two minutes later, Pat Egan sent a shot towards the
Captain cage. However, a CNU defenseman deflected the ball to R-MC
attackman Kevin Patton. The sophomore scooped up the ground ball
and deposited the game-winning overtime goal in the back of the CNU
net to give the Yellow Jackets a thrilling 12-11 come-from-behind
win.
In addition to Egan and Midwinter's offensive production, Kevin
Patton and Billy Rowe each registered a goal and an assist. Jake
Leddy tallied one goal and three assists, while Rich Wilkens and
Brendan Kerrigan also netted goals for the Yellow Jackets.
Goalkeepers Adam Liberto and Jason Crawford combined for seven
saves on 29 CNU shots.
For the Captains, Justin King (3g, 1a), Ryan Merrell (3g, 0a),
John Glaser (1g, 1a), Zach Hill (2g, 0a), and Matt Gleisner (2g,
0a) led the CNU offense. Goalkeeper Tyler Jackson made 21 saves on
50 shots in 61:05 of work.
R-MC returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on
Saturday when the Yellow Jackets travel to Lexington to face
eight-ranked Washington & Lee University (10-1) at 1 pm.
