Hampden-Sydney Knocks off Randolph-Macon Men's LAX 19-11
in ODAC Quarterfinals

HAMDPEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney scored five unanswered
goals to start the second-half , lifting the Tigers to a 19-11 win
over Randolph-Macon in the Quarterfinals of the ODAC Men's Lacrosse
Tournament. Billy Rowe led R-MC with three goals and two assists,
while H-SC's Micah Keller netted six goals and added an assist. The
Yellow Jackets end their 2009 campaign with a 7-7 overall
record.
R-MC senior Rich Wilkens scored the first goal of the game just 18
seconds after the opening whistle, receiving a pass from attackman
Kevin Patton and sending a shot past H-SC goalie Mark Bagby to give
the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers responded by
scoring three goals in less than four minutes as Keller tallied two
goals and an assist in that span. With 9:09 remaining in the first
quarter, Rowe found attackman Tyler Midwinter for a man-up tally to
pull R-MC within one goal.
Less than one minute later, H-SC's Kyle Jett scored an unassisted
goal with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter to spark a 5-0 Tiger
run that gave them n 8-2 lead with 13:05 remaining in the second
quarter. Both teams traded two goals as midfielders Wilkens and
Connor Barnes registered goals for the Yellow Jackets. Although
they faced a 10-4 deficit with six minutes remaining, the Yellow
Jackets kept fighting. R-MC's Patrick Egan scored with 5:21
remaining and Patton netted a goal with just seven seconds
remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets entered halftime trailing
10-6.
The Tigers emerged from halftime determined to widen their
lead. H-SC outscored R-MC 8-2 in the third stanza as seven
different Tigers scored goals. Keller netted the final two H-SC
tallies of the third quarter, while Rowe and freshman Matt Andes
registered goals for the Yellow Jackets. R-MC outscored H-SC 3-1 in
the final quarter, but could not overcome the ten-goal, fourth
quarter deficit.
In addition to Keller's seven-point performance, Cole Hawthorne
(3g, 1a), Kenny Mathison (2g, 2a), Carter Mavromatis (2g, 2a), Ben
Clarke (2g, 1a), Andrew Mahoney (1g, 2a), and Kyle Jett (2g, 0a)
led the Tigers with multiple points. R-MC's Billy Rowe (3g, 2a),
Patrick Egan (2g, 1a), Matt Andes (2g, 1a), Kevin Patton (1g, 2a),
and Rich Wilkens (2g, 0a) led the visitors, while Connor Barnes and
Tyler Midwinter finished with one goal each.
H-SC's Mark Bagby tallied six saves on 28 shots while yielding
eight goals in 45 minutes of work. Yellow Jacket goalie Adam
Liberto grabbed seven saves on 25 shots while allowing 12 goals in
35:22 of work. R-MC's Ray Wodarski registered three saves on seven
shots while yielding one goal.
The Tigers improve their record to 8-8 and face Roanoke (16-0) on
Wednesday in Salem, Va. The Maroons are ranked first in the nation
as well as seeded first in the ODAC Tournament.
