SALEM, VA -- The Randolph-Macon softball team lost to Lynchburg and
Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, thus eliminating the Yellow Jackets
from the ODAC Tournament. R-MC finishes its 2009 campaign with a
15-17 overall record.
R-MC faced top-seeded Lynchburg in the early game. The Hornets
opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a grand
slam off the bat of Rachel Gallagher. The Yellow Jackets responded
with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run shot
courtesy of senior Ashley Crouch. The Hornets were not
rattled, however, and came back with a decisive five-run
performance in the bottom of the fourth. Gallagher finished the
game 3-for-4 with five RBI and two extra base hits, and Lauren
Duguay was 3-for-3 with two runs and one run batted in.
Barbie Miles threw a complete game to earn her 15th win
of the season while allowing just six hits and one earned run while
striking out six. Crouch was the lone Randolph-Macon player with a
multi-hit performance as she went 2-for-2 with three RBI and one
run scored.
The Yellow Jackets looked to rebound in their 5 pm matchup against
Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins were coming off a 2-1 loss to
Roanoke College. VWC took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning,
but R-MC responded with a run in the second frame. The Marlins,
however, tallied four runs in the third inning and two runs in the
fourth to take a 7-1 lead entering the fifth. R-MC's Paige Smith
sent a shot over the outfield wall for a two-run homerun in the top
of the fifth, but the Marlins scored a pair of runs in the bottom
of the sixth to seal the 9-3 win. Yellow Jacket hurler Christi Wise
picked up the loss, while Brittaney Brown earned the win for VWC.
Marlin freshman outfielder Brenae Pettit registered three hits in
three at-bats, tallying three runs, two RBIs, and a walk. R-MC's
Paige Smith and Morgan Greene finished with two hits
apiece, while Megan Shepherd chipped in with a hit and an RBI.
