2009 ODAC Baseball Tournament
Box
Score:
LYNCHBURG, VA - Dann Woods' game-winning run on a wild pitch
capped a five run ninth inning rally and sent Randolph-Macon to a
6-5 victory over Bridgewater in the first day of the 2009 Old
Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Lynchburg City
Stadium.
With the score 5-1, R-MC (18-17) rallied in the ninth inning,
loading the bases before Mike Wallace brought home Kevin Davis on a
sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2.
J.C. Conway then walked to reload the bases for the Jackets.
Jeff Beck followed with a single up the middle to score a pair and
draw R-MC within one run at 5-4.
Jay Lichter walked to load the bases once again and he was
followed by Adam Carpenter who drew a free pass to tie the game at
5-5. With Brian Jordan at the plate, Bridgewater reliever Chris
Gramm uncorked a wild pitch to score Woods and give R-MC the
victory 6-5.
The Jackets win spoiled a great outing from BC starter Drew
Elkins who allowed just three hits over eight innings, before
running into trouble in the ninth. Elkins struck out seven and
walked just a pair and held R-MC without a hit for the first four
innings.
BC (22-16) got on the board in the first inning to go up 1-0.
With one out, R-MC starter Byron Mendenhall struck out Aaron Read,
but Read advanced to first base on a wild pitch and then stole
second. Andrew Chrismer followed with an RBI double down the left
field line to put the Eagles on top.
Mendenhall and Elkins then locked up in a pitchers dual for the
next four innings before the Eagles extended its advantage with
four runs in the top-half of the sixth inning.
In that inning, BC loaded the bases with one out and Drew Easter
singled to plate Mitchell Edwards and Mike Lenox, making the score
3-0. Two batters later, Tyler Hodges singled to centerfield to
bring home Easter and Brett Howell, pushing the Eagles advantage to
5-0.
Mendenhall went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits,
while striking out three. Haile Lytton came out of the pen and
threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to improve his record to 3-1
on the season.
Randolph-Macon advances to take on Hampden-Sydney at 7:00 p.m.
on Friday, while Bridgewater will face Washington and Lee at 3:00
p.m.
