Over Virginia Wesleyan
(Box
Score)
ASHLAND, VA - Charlie Harrt's ninth inning walk-off homerun
lifted the Randolph-Macon baseball team to a 6-5 victory over ODAC
rival Virginia Wesleyan Thursday afternoon in Ashland.
R-MC (9-15 / 4-5 ODAC) got on the board first in its initial at bat
when Brian Jordan and Kevin Davis opened the frame with
back-to-back walks. Jordan came around two batters later when Hartt
delivered an RBI single to put R-MC up 1-0.
A two out, RBI single Max Axlerod in the top of the second inning,
plated Kevin Nally to tie the game at 1-1, before a Greg Mitro solo
homerun in the home half of the second put the Jackets back out in
front 2-1.
The game remained that way until VWC's CJ Rhodes hit a three-run
homerun in the Marlins fifth, scoring Phil Cadle and Myles Shipp to
give Virginia Wesleyan a 4-2 advantage.
R-MC cut the VWC lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the fifth on an
RBI single by Mike Wallace, before Cadle extended the Marlins lead
to 5-3 with a solo homerun in the seventh inning.
In the ninth, Davis walked to lead off the inning and scored when
Wallace followed with an RBI double. Hartt then followed Wallace
with his third homerun of the season to give Randolph-Macon the
victory.
Steve Craun (2-0) got the win out of the pen for R-MC, tossing 1.2
perfect innings of relief, while VWC reliever Nick Wilson took the
loss after surrendering Hartt's homerun, dropping his record to 2-1
on the year.
Wallace led R-MC with three hits on the day, while Greg Meleski,
Hartt and Mitro all had a pair of hits in the win for
Randolph-Macon.
