R-MC Powers its Way to a Doubleheader Sweep of Guilford 10-7 &
18-10
(Game
One) / (Game
Two)
ASHLAND, VA - Randolph-Macon hit a combined seven home runs en
route to a doubleheader sweep of ODAC rival Guilford on Saturday
afternoon in Ashland. R-MC won game on 10-7 and the nightcap 18-10.
R-MC (17-17 / 12-6 ODAC) found itself down 4-0 in the top of the
fourth inning after Joe John doubled to open the frame and came
around to score on a Alex Starbuck single. Later in the inning,
Drew Ward singled to plate John and the Quakers took advantage of a
miscue in the field by R-MC to go up by four.
The Yellow Jackets erupted for all 10 of their runs on seven hits
in the bottom half of the fourth to put the game away. The big blow
of the inning came when Charlie Hartt hit a three-run homer.
James Bierlein picked up the win on the mound for R-MC, tossing
five innings and allowing just two earned runs to improve his
record to 3-0 on the season.
In game two, Hartt and Dann Woods each hit home runs, while Jeff
Beck and Mike Wallace hit two round trippers each as the Yellow
Jackets completed the sweep.
Hartt put R-MC up 1-0 in its initial at bat with an RBI single
that scored Kevin Davis. The Yellow Jackets then loaded the bases
later in the inning and Beck delivered a grand slam to push the
Jackets lead to 5-0.
Randolph-Macon then took advantage of four Quaker errors in the
second inning to score a pair of runs to go up 7-0.
Guilford clawed back, putting up five runs on five hits in the
third inning to pull within two at 7-5. John Goodwin, Kyle Wooden
and Ward all had RBI hits for the Quakers in that inning.
The game stayed that way until the bottom of sixth when the
Yellow Jackets put the contest away with an eight spot that
featured a solo homerun from Woods, a three-run homer off the bat
off Wallace and a two run shot by Beck, that extended the R-MC lead
to 15-5.
Dillon Sheads went 2.2 innings in relief to pick up the win for
R-MC. Sheads surrendered three hits and struck out four to run his
record to 1-0 on the season. GC starter Corey Landis was saddled
with the loss after giving up 10 runs in 5.2 innings of work.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Thursday in the first
round of the ODAC Baseball Tournament in Lynchburg. R-MC's opponent
and game time will be released on Sunday.
