R-MC Sweeps Doubleheader Against Catholic

ASHLAND, Va. - The Randolph-Macon softball team swept a
nonconference doubleheader against Catholic on Thursday, earning
7-3 and 10-5 wins over the Cardinals. The Yellow Jackets never
trailed in either contest.
In Game One, R-MC jumped out to a 6-0 lead by registering a pair
of runs in the third inning and four runs in the fifth inning.
First baseman Laura Bauer batted 3-for-3 and tallied four runs
batted in as well as a run scored. Katie McCauley hit 2-for-3 with
a pair of runs. Yellow Jacket hurler Courtney Brooks allowed two
earned runs and five hits in the complete-game shutout. CUA's
Stephanie Clemente picked up the loss.
The Yellow Jackets carried their momentum into Game Two as R-MC
posted four runs in the first inning. R-MC's Morgan Greene led off
the inning with a walk, Megan Shepherd reached base on a walk, and
Laura Bauer was awarded first base on a catcher's interference
call. With just one out, R-MC had loaded the bases without putting
the ball in play. R-MC's Ashley Crouch and Shannon Long hit RBI
singles to fuel the rally.
After Catholic (12-12) scored pairs of runs in the second and
fourth innings and R-MC tallied one in the third, the Yellow
Jackets opened the tight 5-4 contest with four runs in the bottom
of the fourth inning. Randolph-Macon pitcher Christi Wise yielded
just one run in the last three innings and the Yellow Jackets
tacked on a run in the fifth inning to secure the victory. Wise
struck out eight CUA batters in seven innings of work to earn the
victory. Cardinal hurler Brittany Sobieraj struck out seven batters
in six innings, but yielded eight earned runs in the loss.
The Yellow Jackets (15-13) return to Old Dominion Athletic
Conference action on Sunday when they travel to Guilford for a 2 pm
doubleheader. R-MC closes out its regular season at Virginia State
on April 22nd.
