(Box
Score)
ASHLAND, VA - The Randolph-Macon baseball team rallied from an
early 10 run deficit to tie Methodist, only to drop a 12-11
decision to the Monarchs on Monday afternoon in Ashland.
MU (20-7) scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning,
before R-MC pushed across its first run in the third inning when
James Bierlein doubled home Adam Carpenter to make the score 2-1.
In the fourth inning, the Monarchs sent 11 men to the plate,
strung together five consecutive hits to start the inning and took
advantage of two miscues in the field by the Jackets to score six
runs and go up 8-1.
With the score 11-1 in favor of MU, R-MC scored six times in the
sixth inning, taking advantage of three errors by the Monarchs. Key
hits came from Ryan Dickerson who provided a two-run single and a
two run homer by Jay Lichter that made the score 11-7.
In the R-MC seventh Dann Woods and Kevin Davis reached base with
one out and Andrew Thomas doubleed to score both and pull R-MC
within two at 11-9. Jeff Beck followed with a homerun to score
Thomas and tie the game at 11.
The game stayed that way until the ninth inning when Brian
Goodwin singled to open the frame and moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt. Goodwin scored two batters later when Brian Inghram
singled to deliver what proved to be the game winning run.
Josh Ellwood, who surrendered the single to Goodwin, took the
loss to drop his record to 0-2 on the season, while Alex Sholar
surrendered just one hit in two innings of relief to secure the win
for MU.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts
Virginia Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m.
