R-MC Powers its Way to an ODAC Doubleheader Split at Virginia
Wesleyan
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Randolph-Macon softball team earned a
doubleheader split with Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday, dropping
game one by the score of 8-4, but bouncing back to take game two
5-1. R-MC now stands at 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC.
In game one, VWC hurler Brittany Brown struck out nine of the
final 10 Randolph-Macon College batters that she faced en route to
leading the host Marlins to an 8-4 victory in the first game of an
Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Marlins
Field. Brown struck out 12 Yellow Jackets overall, tying the VWC
single-game strikeout record for the second time in her career.
Paige Smith supplied early offense for R-MC hitting a three-run
homer in the top of the first inning after Morgan Greene led off
with a double and Megan Shepherd reached on an error.
The Jackets picked up another run in the third inning, capitalizing
on another Marlin miscue to extend their lead to 4-0.
VWC took the lead for good in with six runs in the fourth inning
and then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to go up
8-4 and put the game away.
In game two, southpaw Christi Wise surrendered just one run on
three hits and struck out seven in a complete game to push her
record to 1-2 on the season.
R-MC got on the board early again, this time courtesy of a three
run round tripper off the bat of Shepherd that scored Smith and
Laura Bauer.
In the third inning Bauer walked to lead off the frame then came
around to score two batters later when Shannon Long connected for a
homerun of her own, making the score 5-0.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday when it
hosts Virginia State at 1:00 p.m. in Ashland.
