Division I George Washington Holds Off Randolph-Macon 9-3

ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team won for the third time in their last four home games today against Randolph-Macon by the score of 9-3.

Ryan Lapointe got the start for the Colonials and threw five shutout innings to pick up his first victory of the season. The right-hander struck out five and only allowed one hit.

R-MC's (4-9) Byron Mendenhall started and went two innings, surrendering just one run on a pair of hits before giving way to Steve Carper who gave up one run in an inning of work,

GWU (9-10) scored six runs off three different Jacket relievers in the middle three frames to take a commanding 8-0 advantage after six innings of play.

After George Washington tacked on a run in its eighth inning, Mike Wallace led off the ninth for R-MC with a walk and came around when Bryan Hannum followed with a pinch hit homerun to make the score 9-2.

With one out, Greg Mitro singled and Jay Lichter walked before James Moore delivered and RBI single to plate Mitro, making the score 9-3 in favor of the Colonials.

R-MC would load the bases, but Colonial reliever Jon Chirumbolo got Dann Woods to hit into a game-ending double play to seal the win for GWU.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action on  Wednesday when it travels to Harrisonburg, VA for a 3:00 p.m. ODAC game with the Royals of Eastern Mennonite.
