Division I George Washington Holds Off Randolph-Macon
9-3
ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team
won for the third time in their last four home games today against
Randolph-Macon by the score of 9-3.
Ryan Lapointe got the start for the Colonials and threw five
shutout innings to pick up his first victory of the season. The
right-hander struck out five and only allowed one hit.
R-MC's (4-9) Byron Mendenhall started and went two innings,
surrendering just one run on a pair of hits before giving way to
Steve Carper who gave up one run in an inning of work,
GWU (9-10) scored six runs off three different Jacket relievers
in the middle three frames to take a commanding 8-0 advantage after
six innings of play.
After George Washington tacked on a run in its eighth inning,
Mike Wallace led off the ninth for R-MC with a walk and came around
when Bryan Hannum followed with a pinch hit homerun to make
the score 9-2.
With one out, Greg Mitro singled and Jay Lichter walked before
James Moore delivered and RBI single to plate Mitro, making the
score 9-3 in favor of the Colonials.
R-MC would load the bases, but Colonial reliever Jon Chirumbolo
got Dann Woods to hit into a game-ending double play to seal the
win for GWU.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Wednesday when it
travels to Harrisonburg, VA for a 3:00 p.m. ODAC game with the
Royals of Eastern Mennonite.
