R-MC Baseball Opens Season with a Doubleheader Sweep of St. Mary's
(Game 1 Boxscore / Game 2 Boxscore)

ASHLAND, VA - Randolph-Macon opened its 2009 baseball season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting St. Mary's of Maryland Saturday, winning game one 6-1 and game two 7-6.

In the opener, right-hander Kyle Hicks surrendered just two hits over five innings to pick up the win on the mound for R-MC. Hicks struck out two and walked four in the victory.

With R-MC (2-0) leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, R-MC struck for three runs to go up 5-0. A two-run homerun off the bat of Mike Wallace, highlighted the inning.

The Yellow Jackets tacked on a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brian Jordan singled to start the inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-1.

Jordan had two hits on the afternoon, while Charlie Hartt had a pair of hits including a solo homerun.

In game two, R-MC scored five runs in the home half of the second inning to jump out to a commanding lead early, but the advantage was short lived as the Seahawks struck back for a pair of runs in the third and three runs in the fourth inning.

SMC (0-2) took the lead 6-5 in the fifth inning after Matt Baden tripled to open the inning and scored on a failed pickoff attempt.

With two outs in the next half inning, Jeff Beck and JC Conway singled to put runners on first and second for Jay Lichter who singled to plate Beck, tying the game at 6-6.

In the home half of the sixth, Greg Mitro homered to left field to give R-MC a 7-6 advantage. Right-hander Nick Simons gave up a single to start the SMC seventh, but got a fly out and a double play ball to end the game and seal the win. Simons picked up the victory after going 2.1 innings out of the pen without giving up a run and striking out two.

Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's will close out its series on Sunday with a single game at 12:00 p.m.
