R-MC Baseball Splits on Final Day of ODAC/USA South
Challenge
GREENSBORO, NC - Randolph-Macon closed out its stay at the ODAC/USA
South Challenge with a split on Sunday, defeating NC Wesleyan and a
loss to Greensboro 17-6 in its final game of the weekend. R-MC is
now 4-2 overall on the season.
In the win over NCWC, R-MC starter Byron Mendenhall gave up just
two hits, no runs through six innings of work and left the game up
4-0 on the strength of a Charlie Hartt solo homerun and a base
clearing double by Greg Mitro.
The Battling Bishops fought back and tied the game
at 4-4 before R-MC scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
In that inning, Hartt led off with a double and JC
Conway was then intentionally walked. Expecting a bunt, the NCWC
infield shifted and Jeff Beck found a hole on the left
side to score Hartt. James Bierlien then doubled home Conway and
pinch runner Dann Woods to put R-MC up 7-4.
NCWC pushed across a run in the top of the
ninth off R-MC reliever Steve Craun to cut the R-MC lead to 7-5.
Craun then loaded the bases before striking out the last batter of
the game to pick up his first career win.
In the loss to Greensboro, pitcher Richard Allred
got the win for The Pride, which plated five runs in both the third
and eighth innings. Allred threw 6.2 innings, scattered seven hits,
struck out five and walked one R-MC batter.
Brian Jordan and James Moore each had a pair of
hits in the loss for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Wednesday
when they travel to Christopher Newport. First pitch is slated for
2:30 p.m. in Newport News.
