ASHLAND, VA - Behind a six goal third quarter, Virginia Wesleyan
was able to extend a two goal halftime lead and then held off a
late rally by Randolph-Macon as the Marlins upended the Yellow
Jackets 14-10 in ODAC Men's Lacrosse action.
R-MC's Paul Johnsen scored the first of his game-high five goals
with just under six minutes left in the first quarter to give the
Jackets a 1-0 lead. Brett Morris then fired back for VWC with 3:37
remaining in the open stanza to tie the score.
Peter LaPaglia and Billy Rowe each scored early in the second
quarter to give R-MC a 3-2 advantage with 13 minutes left in the
half. VWC then rattled off three goals to hold a 5-2 advantage at
the break.
The Marlins came out of the intermission with back-to-back goals
in the first 51 seconds the second half to go up 7-2. Jordan Kenney
and Maicin Dunk then scored to push the VWC advantage to 9-2.
Johnsen stopped the run, scoring a goal with just over five
minutes remaining before VWC scored five of the next six goals to
take a 13-3 advantage with 10:30 to play in the game.
Connor Barnes sparked what proved to be a 6-1 run for the Yellow
Jackets during the final seven minutes of the game. During the run,
Johnsen scored three times, while Tyler Watkins and JR Sander each
tallied a score.
R-MC out shot VWC 38-34 and held a 42-37 advantage in
groundballs. Ray Wodarski made 12 stops in net for the Jackets in
his first career start between the pipes.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at
Christopher Newport University.
