R-MC Softball Knocks off No. 6 Lynchburg 7-6; Game Two Halted Due to Darkness
(Box Score

ASHLAND, VA - The Randolph-Macon College softball team knocked off No. 6 Lynchburg College 7-6 in 11 innings in game one of what was supposed to be an ODAC doubleheader. Game two proved to be exciting as well as the Hornets and Yellow Jackets found themselves tied at 6-6 in the eighth inning when the game was suspended due to darkness. A decision as to the game being continued at a later date is yet to be determined.

R-MC now stands at 21-10 overall, tying a school record for wins that was set last season. The Yellow Jackets are now 4-7 in ODAC play. LC is 30-5 overall and 13-2 in the league.

In game one, Paige Smith singled with two outs in the 11th inning to score Morgan Greene and give R-MC its first win in school history over the defending ODAC champion Hornets.

The Jackets trailed 6-5 heading into the decisive home half of the 11th when Katie  McCauley singled to move placed runner Shannon Long to third.

After LC starter Katie Bruce struck out Courtney Brooks, Lynchburg catcher Kirstin Swank picked off Long for the second out of the inning. Greene then singled to move McCauley to third. Carrie Barchick then won a long battle with Bruce, singling to tie the game up and setting the stage for Smith.

Katie Raulerson went all 11 innings in the circle for R-MC, picking up her seventh win of the season after, allowing just six hits and one earned run in the game.

In game two, R-MC found itself down 6-2 after LC put together a four run sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. The Yellow Jackets fought back in their half of the six, scoring three times after Ashley Crouch doubled with two outs and Shannon Long followed with a homerun to cut the Hornet advantage to 6-4. Katie Newton then delivered a homerun to make the score 6-5.

In the Yellow Jackets seventh, Greene reached on an error and moved to third on a bunt single by Barchick. Smith then tied the game with a sacrifice fly that also moved Barchick to third. After walks to Meaghan Mauck and Ashley Crouch loaded the bases, LC starter Barbara Miles got out of further trouble when she got Shannon Long to strike out to end the inning.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan College at 3:00 p.m. in Ashland.
