Seahawks Fly Past Yellow Jackets in Final Minutes of Men's Soccer
Action
(Box

ASHLAND - The R-MC men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker
to St. Mary's on Wednesday 2-1. After the Yellow Jackets labored
for seventy minutes to knot the match at one goal apiece in the
eightieth minute, the Seahawks responded by burying their second
tally of the day to hand R-MC its third consecutive loss.
Saint Mary's grabbed an early lead in the seventh minute of the
first half. After feeding Brian Payne, SMC senior Chris Madrigal
made a short run and received a return pass from his teammate.
Madrigal blasted the shot past R-MC goalkeeper Jason DePre for the
first goal of the match.
Down 1-0, the Yellow Jackets responded by outshooting Saint
Mary's in both halves. After the Yellow Jackets desperately sent
shot after shot at Seahawk goalkeeper Dan Gressang, R-MC midfielder
Scott Landolt tied the match with just 10:11 remaining in
regulation. Freshman Tyler Cornelio sent a beautiful cross to the
feet of the senior, who rocketed a shot into the SMC cage. The
senior's tally electrified his teammates, who had possessed the
ball for the majority of the match.
As the second half clock ticked down, it appeared as though the
two squads were headed for overtime. However, Seahawk forward Brian
Payne converted a pass from teammate Benard Agyingi in front of the
Yellow Jacket cage to put his team in front 2-1 with 2:30
remaining. After a long R-MC shot sailed over the SMC cage in the
eighty-ninth minute, the Seahawks cleared the ball to seal the win.
R-MC outshot Saint Mary's 20-14. Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Jason
DePre tallied seven saves.
The Yellow Jackets return to ODAC action when they host Emory
& Henry on Saturday. Please note that the match has been
rescheduled for 11:30 AM.
