Women's Soccer Uses Strong Second Half to Overcome SVU

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Women's Soccer hosted Southern Virginia for their second home game of the season. The Yellow Jackets used a strong second half to win 2-1.

The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 2, Southern Virginia 1
Venue: Ashland, Va. / Randolph-Macon College / RMC Grass Soccer Field

How it Happened
  • SVU applied pressure early and in the 15th minute, Ashlee Kelsey had a one-on-one opportunity with Maeve Konstantoulas (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Spalding) after a through ball on the ground from McKenna Curry. Kelsey buried the shot on the far right third of the goal and gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets flipped the pressure the opposite way with a shot from Noel Moxey (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) that rang off the crossbar. In the 29th minute, Taylor Gim (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had a chance to equalize the match but the Knights' keeper Chloe Miller made an excellent save.
  • In the final five minutes of the first half, the Yellow Jackets recorded back-to-back shots while looking to level the match. SVU defended well and took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
  • Coming out of the break, the Lemon and Black resumed the attack, testing Miller on two scoring opportunities.
  • In the 55th minute, Emma Owens (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) made a driving play on the end line and sent an outstanding pass to Cece Beem (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill), who buried the shot with her left foot, leveling the match at 1-1.
  • Both teams traded scoring opportunities to take the lead but it would be the Yellow Jackets who struck on a corner opportunity by Gim, which connected with Jackie Wenzlik (Durham, N.C./Riverside) to grab the Lemon and Black's first lead of the match.
  • In the final 10 minutes of play, RMC continued to attack but SVU held firm and the Yellow Jackets walked away with a 2-1 win over the USA South runners-up from last season.
Inside the Numbers
  • RMC outshot SVU 14-to-12 overall but the Knights held the advantage in shots on goal seven-to-six.
  • Konstantoulas played the full 90 minutes, making six saves and only allowed one goal.
  • Both of the Yellow Jackets' goals tonight came from players off the bench, with Wenzlik and Beem each playing under 45 minutes and recording the two goals.
  • Owens tallied the first point of her sophomore campaign.
  • Beem scored the first goal of her collegiate career in this afternoon's match.
  • The Lemon and Black held an advantage in corner opportunities eight-to-five in the contest.
