How It Happened:
- In the top of the first, Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) ripped a single up the middle as the first batter of the game. Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) followed with a single on a full count, putting Jackets on the corners with no outs. Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) loaded the bases once he drew a walk, allowing Zach Stolze (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to drive two runs in with a single through the middle, establishing a 2-0 lead. RMC reloaded the bases on a walk from James Baffone (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's). Justin Lanouette (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) used a sacrifice fly with two strikes to push Schmitt across for a 3-0 advantage.
- Carter Schuma (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal) retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, while striking out eight over the span.
- The Hornets used their first two batters in the bottom of the fifth to post back-to-back singles. A wild pitch sent them to second and third and an ensuing single to center brought SU back within one, trailing 2-3. The Hornet on first advanced to third on a steal and an error and a sharp ground ball to first evened the game, 3-3.
- Three consecutive singles from Shenandoah loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Despite getting the second and third outs, RMC found itself down 3-4 on a sacrifice fly.
- An error and ground out in the bottom of the eighth put a Hornet on third with one out. SU was able to push the run across on a single to center, extending its lead to 5-3.
By The Numbers:
- Shenandoah led Randolph-Macon in hits, nine-to-seven, with the Hornets leading five-to-three in RBI.
- The Yellow Jackets led the Hornets five-to-two in walks.
- Over his five innings of work, Schuma fanned nine Hornets over the course of 89 pitches. The junior gave up five hits and three runs, without walking a batter.
- Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) racked up a team-high two hits, while also adding one walk.
- Stolze posted two RBI, which tied for the most in the game.
- Schmitt and Baffone each tied for a game-high two walks. The shortstop also registered a hit, while the designated hitter had RMC's only stolen bag.
- Wernoski and Bowles each tallied a hit and a run in the contest, as both juniors went 1-for-4.
For the Record:
- Schuma racked up nine strikeouts over his five innings of work, setting a new career-high.
- With his two walks, Schmitt now has 118 in his career. With the mark, he surpassed Ryan Duphorn (116, 2017-21) for the most in program history.
- Wernoski has now gotten on base in 22 consecutive games, with at least one hit in each of his last 13 contests.
- Bowles extended his on-base streak to 16 games in-a-row.
- With their runs, Bowles has now crossed the plate in nine consecutive games, while Wernoski has scored in each of his last seven.
