Box Score SCRANTON, Pa.  Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball reached the Division III NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, but fell just short in a tough competition against the Otterbein Cardinals.

The Basics:
Score: Otterbein 60, Randolph-Macon 45
Venue: Scranton, Pa. // John Long Center // University of Scranton
Records: Randolph-Macon (21-8, 13-3 ODAC), Otterbein (23-5, 14-2 OAC)

How it Happened
  • While it was the Cardinals dropping in two layups and a three on their first three possessions of the game, a deep turnaround floater from McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) and triple from Riley White (Hamilton, Va./Virginia Academy) provided an immediate 5-7 response for the Yellow Jackets, just 1:54 into the game. After Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa) followed with a pair of free throws, an elbow floater from Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) knotted the contest at nine with 5:33 to play. The Cardinals created a 14-9 lead after nailing a three, but Madison Langdon (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) checked in and hit two midrange jumpers, pushing RMC ahead 15-14, with 2:35 remaining in the frame. Even though the Yellow Jackets were down 18-20 after one, a three-ball from Erin Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) sent the team to the second with momentum.
  • Randolph-Macon used the first 2:18 of the second quarter to construct a 7-0 run, led by a block from Byers and two close-range buckets from Matheny. In the following transition, Otterbein hit a three before Smith got another floater to drop, putting the contest at 27-27 heading into the media timeout. The Cardinals led a 6-0 run out of the break after some offensive rebounding, taking a 33-27 advantage with 2:29 on the clock. RMC tightened up its defense for the final stretch of the quarter, keeping itself down six at the break.
  • Over the course of the first 2:21, the Cardinals got two jump shots to go down, taking a 37-27 lead. The heart of the quarter became a defensive battle, as only six total points were scored until there was 3:58 remaining. After hauling in a defensive rebound, Langdon gave the Jackets what they needed, as the freshman hit a three to cut the deficit to 30-43.
  • Randolph-Macon saw Byers start the scoring for the program, as she dropped in a layup in response to a three pointer from the opposition. Matheny went on to hit a free throw, which preceded a driving layup from Porter, getting back within 16, down 35-51. At the 5:51 mark, Matheny hit a pair of free throws, before a scoop and score for Smith continued the comeback, putting RMC down 39-53. With 2:21 on the clock, Liz Wyrick (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) entered the game and knocked down an elbow jumper, thanks to a nice feed from White. Matheny continued to produce, as the senior used a drop step to sink another shot off the glass to pull within 15. Despite a late set of free throws from Rachael Anderson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring), the Lemon and Black were unable to take the game, with a final score of 45-60 in the first round of the Division III NCAA Tournament.
