Men's Lax Battles Christopher Newport in Mid-Week Showdown

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Randolph-Macon Men's Lacrosse team took on No. 3 nationally ranked Christopher Newport in a tough non-conference midweek matchup in Newport News, Virginia.

How it Happened
  • Two minutes into the start of the first quarter, Kevin and Ryan Miller combined for CNU's first goal of the game. The Captains doubled their lead with 9:08 on the clock. CNU kept the offensive momentum rolling, tallying the next four goals, taking a commanding 6-0 lead. Andrew Bergesen (Olney, Md./Sherwood) got the Yellow Jackets on the board with 2:12 remaining in the first quarter on an unassisted goal. With 1:22 left in the first 15 minutes of action, the Captains added one more goal for a 7-1 lead heading into the second frame.
  • Both defenses held firm through majority of the quarter, with senior goalie Jack Isaacs (Coquitlam, Canada/Centennial) making key saves throughout the quarter. The Yellow Jackets had scoring opportunities, but CNU keeper Mason Bellinger limited the Yellow Jackets' chances. 57 seconds before halftime, the Captains grabbed a goal from Ryan Miller to take an 8-1 lead into the break.
  • RMC started the scoring in the second half, when Charlie Violette (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) snatched up a ground ball in the Yellow Jackets' defensive end and took the ball the length of the field, burying the shot for RMC's second goal of the afternoon. Less than a minute later, Bergesen added his second goal of the game on an unassisted goal, cutting CNU's lead to 8-3. The Captains answered the Yellow Jackets' two-goal run at the 6:41 mark with a three-goal run of their own, taking the clock down to three minutes left in the third quarter, Jamie Smith accounted for two of CNU's goals. For the final three minutes of the third frame, neither team recorded a goal and CNU took an 11-3 lead into the final quarter.
  • At the start of the final frame, both teams traded possessions until the 11:40 mark when Smith was assisted by Daniel Siaton, adding the 12th goal for the Captains. RMC answered a minute later when Mike Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) found Matt Carter (Glen Allen, Va./ Deep Run) for the fourth Yellow Jackets' goal, cutting the lead to eight. At the 9:15 mark, Smith added the 13th goal for the Captains. 44 seconds later, Grant Sobel (Mechanicsville, Va./Christchurch) responded with an unassisted goal, adding the fifth goal of the afternoon for the Yellow Jackets. With 5:30 left in the final frame, JT Harvey (Ruther Glen, Va./Riverbend) tallied the sixth and final RMC goal of the contest, making the score 13-6. The Captains added one final goal at the 1:09 mark to close out the game, resulting in a 14-6 loss for the Lemon and Black.     
Inside the Numbers
  • Bergesen led the Yellow Jackets offensively with two goals in the contest.
  • Harvey, Violette, Carter and Sobel each recorded one goal against the Captains.
  • Allen picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers on the defensive end of the field.
  • Christopher Newport outshot Randolph-Macon 40-31 and 24-to-17 in shots on goal.
  • The Captains held the edge in transition, going 27-31 (87%) on the clear, while the Yellow Jackets went 22-26 (84.6%).
  • Will Robertson (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) and Carson Mingo (Cambridge, Md./Gilman) went a combined 14-24 (58.3%) from the faceoff x.
  • In the ground ball department, Christopher Newport scooped up 45 to Randolph-Macon's 31.
