How it Happened
  • A competitive first set saw the teams remain within one point of each other until Randolph-Macon forced three consecutive attack errors from Lancaster Bible, putting RMC up 8-6. Despite two kills from Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run), the Yellow Jackets were forced into a timeout after they found themselves trailing 10-13 after a run from the Chargers. The Yellow Jackets kept the set within three, as Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) found Wagenhauser for back-to-back kills before locating Landon Brinkley (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) for another one. Even though they were within three, down 17-20, LBC won five of the set's next seven points to take set one, 25-19.
  • While Brady Plucker (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) assisted Wagenhauser after Rogan found Brinkley, the Yellow Jackets trailed 7-10 after two different errors. RMC quickly corrected itself, as Bryce Matthews (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) tallied two kills to get his team back within one, trailing 14-15. While the Lemon and Black got their first lead of the set, up 18-17 after forcing four errors in five points, they were forced into timeout after kills from Braden Escover and Zeke Clark. Even though Rogan assisted Matthews on another kill in the final three points, RMC dropped set two, 22-25 after kills from three different Chargers.
  • Randolph-Macon asserted some pressure to start the third, as two kills from Matthews and a kill from Wagenhauser saw the Yellow Jackets take an early 5-3 lead. Even though a kill from the home team stopped the run, Plucker lobbed one up for Matthews before Rogan found Wagenhauser, creating a 8-4 advantage. The Chargers stormed all the way back to take a 15-14 lead, forcing a timeout from RMC after two kills and a service ace in the middle of the set. The Lemon and Black were quickly forced into their second timeout after LBC forced an attack error and generated a kill, taking a 17-14 edge. Even though Rogan hit Matthews for back-to-back kills down the stretch, a kill from Kevin Bryant helped the Chargers take set three, 25-20.
