How it Happened
- Randolph-Macon earned the first penalty corner of the game, as Breea Dresler (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) inserted at the 5:36 mark to Greene, who put a shot on goal. After the attempt on target, Dresler inserted on another chance four minutes later and it was Neely Winefordner (Glen Allen, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) who sent a shot wide. With four minutes left in the frame, Janne Roelink (Den Helder, Netherlands/Norfolk Collegiate) tested the Shenandoah keeper again but Cassidy Alexander made the stop. To close out the first, the Hornets got their first shot and it was cleaned up by Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School).
- The two programs traded fouls for the first four minutes until Winefordner posted another shot wide of the cage. 10:57 into the second quarter, Roelink worked to earn her team a penalty corner but the offense was unable to get a shot on goal. Despite this, Brenna McLean (Rock Hall, Md./Queen Anne's County) rifled a shot on net but the score would remain deadlocked through the first half.
- RMC had its best chance of the contest right at the start of the third quarter, as Dresler inserted on a penalty corner for McLean. Her shot was stopped on a defensive save but the play resulted in a penalty corner. Caitlin Porter (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) took the try but Alexander was there to prevent the score. In response, the Hornets got their first penalty corner chance of the game with 4:14 to play in the third and posted a shot on goal. Not only did Ambrogi-Torres make the stop but she followed it with a second save on a following penalty corner opportunity. The two programs tallied one more penalty corner each but the contest would head into the fourth scoreless.
- Shenandoah unleashed a barrage to begin the fourth, as it ripped four shots off of two penalty corners in a 49-second span. The Lemon and Black defense blocked three of them and Ambrogi-Torres was there for the fourth. Randolph-Macon was unable to clear the ball which allowed the Hornets to take two more penalty corners. SU was unable to capitalize on its additional chances, as the Yellow Jacket defense prevented a single shot. With 3:31 to play in the contest, Randolph-Macon worked to earn three consecutive penalty corners. Greene's shot could not bury the goal on the second penalty corner but she cashed in on the third insertion, as Kylee Gorham (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) located the junior for the 1-0 lead. The Hornets had one final try on a penalty corner with 47 seconds left and RMC defended well for the victory.
