How it Happened
- For the first seven minutes of play, neither team could gain momentum as the two programs traded a series of fouls. Janne Roelink (Den Helder, Netherlands/Norfolk Collegiate) opened the offense with a shot on goal, which ultimately led to a penalty corner. Breea Dresler (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) inserted for Roelink who again rifled a shot on target but Rachel Adel was able to make the save for the Eagles. Randolph-Macon earned one more penalty corner in the following minute but BC held RMC without a shot. With 25 seconds remaining in the first, McKayla Clark (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) had her shot blocked. The hosts quickly reversed field and forced Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) to make her first stop of the game, as Bridgewater earned a corner with six seconds left in the frame. The save from the RMC keeper kept the game scoreless through 15 minutes.
- Bridgewater recorded the first shot of the second frame, as its shot was blocked 4:44 into the quarter. Grace Oates (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) went on to tally her fifth shot of the season three minutes later and it rang off the woodwork. The chance opened the floodgates for the Yellow Jackets, as the team earned four penalty corners spanning over the final 3:43 of the half. On the first attempt, Neely Winefordner (Glen Allen, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) put a shot on net that was saved by the BC keeper. While no shots came on the second attempt, try number three saw Roelink tally her third shot of the contest but Adel was there for the stop. On the fourth and final attempt, Roelink inserted and found Natalie Moul (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield), who returned the ball to Roelink for the score to give the squad a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
- The Eagles made a goalie change and it quickly came into play, as Olivia Greene (Amissville, Va./Culpeper County) tested Thalei Khader just 4:16 in with a shot toward the cage. After the save, the Eagles responded with two shots of their own but Ambrogi-Torres made the pair of saves. RMC worked for a penalty corner 7:52 into the period and Clark again had her shot blocked. With 1:33 to go in the third, Bridgewater earned a penalty corner opportunity but pushed the shot wide to keep the Lemon and Black ahead, 1-0 after three.
- 2:55 into the final frame, the Eagles posted a shot that sailed wide of the net. With the lead, the Yellow Jackets then hunkered down on defense and did not allow a shot for 11 consecutive minutes. With 90 seconds to play, Hailey Swartzbaugh (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) stepped up and made her second defensive save of the season. Both Kylee Gorham (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) and Penelope Trageser (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) then went on to post shots in the final two minutes, solidifying a 1-0 win for Randolph-Macon.
