How it Happened
  • Washington and Lee controlled the ball in the offensive zone for the first four minutes of the contest until it earned a penalty corner. Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) registered the first save of the game on the attempt, with the Generals posting the first shot on goal. After some good defense from Neely Winefordner (Glen Allen, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) and Hailey Swartzbaugh (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson), Ambrogi-Torres made a diving stop to prevent a WLU fast-break. While Janne Roelink (Den Helder, Netherlands/Norfolk Collegiate) and Olivia Greene (Amissville, Va./Culpeper County) applied pressure in the final two minutes, the game remained scoreless after one.
  • Once the Generals held the ball in their offense circle for consecutive possessions, they we able to convert on a crossing pass at the 4:14 mark to establish a 1-0 lead. Washington and Lee registered a series of fouls, allowing RMC to try and establish some pressure at the midfield. The visitors sent the ball in toward the goal and Ambrogi-Torres was able to knock it away. WLU then located the rebound and scored on a heads-up play to take a 2-0 lead into the break, with the goal coming with 1:13 remaining in the second.
  • The visitors posted the first shot of the third quarter but sent it wide of the net. On the following possession, the Generals forced in their third goal of the evening, despite the Yellow Jackets holding firm on the goal line. The pressure remained with the road team, as the Generals worked for a corner which led to a 4-0 lead 3:34 into the period, due to the ball bouncing through the crease. Penelope Trageser (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) had a shot opportunity close to the target in response but Helenka Chodakiewicz was there for the stop. The Generals worked for four consecutive penalty corner chances with under six minutes in the third and the home squad was able to shut down each opportunity. Trageser rifled another shot on goal for her team but was unable to pass the WLU goalkeeper, bringing the 0-4 score into the fourth.
  • Randolph-Macon held Washington and Lee to two shots on two penalty corner chances to start the fourth, preventing any attempts on goal. Roelink then got out in transition and earned her team's first penalty corner chance of the game, where she would tip a pass from Kylee Gorham (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) just wide of the net. With 7:08 remaining, the Yellow Jackets worked for another penalty corner and were able to apply some sustained pressure, resulting in their third chance within a two-minute frame. Natalie Moul (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) put a quality shot on target and sailed just wide. While the pace continued to pick up down the stretch, the Generals were able to close out a 4-0 final score on the road.
