How it Happened
Â
- The first set was an even split through the first 24 points of the frame, as both teams were tied 12-12. Five of the next seven points went in favor of the Yellow Jackets to build some cushion, but the Marlins took two straight to bring the deficit back to one point. The Yellow Jackets took control of the set immediately after, posting a 4-0 run and then a 3-0 run to move to set point at 24-17. After two straight points by the Marlins, a service error gave RMC the final point they needed to take the first stanza, 25-19.
- Like the first set, both teams battled back-and-forth until the middle stages of the set, as neither team could build more than a one-point lead until RMC ignited a 4-0 run to hold a 15-11 edge. Seven of the next nine points went in favor of the Marlins, however, giving the visitors the lead at 18-17. RMC returned the favor with another 4-0 run to re-gain the lead. The Jackets led 23-20, but VWU grabbed the next two points to bring the deficit within one. RMC would take the final two points of the set, capped off by a service ace by Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) to move within one set of a sweep.
- After the Marlins took two of the first three points, RMC seized momentum with a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead. VWU rallied to tie the score at six, but RMC pulled away again to make the score 10-7. The Jackets' largest lead of the set was at 15-11, but the Marlins continued to stay within striking distance. VWU brought it within two points at 18-16, and then cut it down to one point at 23-22, but RMC finished the sweep with Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) and Phillip Van Essendelft (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) getting kills for the last two points to win the match.
