How It Happened:
  • After the Cougars stranded two in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) reached on a one-out error. With two away, senior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) singled to move Wernoski to third. On a 2-1 pitch, Harvey crushed a long homer to left, his fifth dinger of the season, to give the home team a 3-0 advantage.
  • RMC added to its lead in the second. Senior Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) laced a one-out triple into the left field corner and came home on a single to center by freshman CJ Chatterton (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) to make it 4-0. Chatterton went to second on a base hit by sophomore Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover), advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Wernoski, making it 5-0. Junior Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) had a base hit to load the bases and Lautenschlager was plunked to plate Bowles. Wernoski scored on a wild pitch and Schmitt came home on a groundout by Harvey to extend the margin to 8-0. Following a single by sophomore Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga), sophomore James Baffone (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) doubled to knock in Lautenschlager. Pinto smacked a three-run homer to left to cap the nine-run outburst and extend the lead to 12-0. It was Pinto's first home run of the season.
  • Bowles had a leadoff single in the third and scored on a base hit by Schmitt to make it 13-0.
  • After Averett scored three in the top of the fifth, Wernoski hit a two-run dinger in the bottom of the fifth, his first of the season, to make it 15-3.

How It Happened:
  • RMC put two runners on in each of the first two innings but were unable to score. AU plated two in the top of the third before the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the frame. Lautenschlager drew a two-out walk, went to second on a wild pitch and came home on a single by Harvey to make the score 2-1.
  • The Cougars added a run in the top of the fourth, but RMC answered again in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) worked a leadoff walk, went to second on a bunt single by Chatterton, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bowles and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wernoski as the score moved to 3-2.
  • The Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the sixth. Chatterton beat out a grounder to short and went to second on a bunt single by Bowles. Wernoski had a base hit to left that knocked in Chatterton, tying the game at 3-3. A sacrifice bunt by Schmitt put both runners in scoring position. Bowles scored on a wild pitch and Wernoski came in on a sacrifice fly by Lautenschlager to give RMC a 5-3 edge.
