ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman
CJ Chatterton (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored the tying run with two away in the ninth and scored the game-winner in the 11th as the Randolph-Macon baseball team pulled out a 5-4 ODAC victory over Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday afternoon.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 5, Hampden-Sydney 4
Venue: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park
Records: RMC 19-11, 11-6 ODAC; H-SC 15-18, 8-11 ODAC
How It Happened:
- The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Senior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) had a leadoff base hit and went to second on a bunt single by sophomore Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga). Freshman Mason Bodnar (Arlington, Va./St. John's Prep) reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Harvey scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Elias Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen), Quici came home on a groundout by Chatterton and Bodnar scored on a base hit by sophomore Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) to give the home team a 3-0 advantage.
- RMC put its first two batters on base in the fourth but were unable to add to their lead.
- Sophomore Patrick Phillips (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) tossed five scoreless innings with four hits, one walk and five strikeouts. He finished his day on the receiving end of a slick 3-6-1 double play started by senior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) to end the fifth.
- The Tigers tallied their four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 edge.
- Chatterton led off the bottom of the ninth with an infield single and was sacrificed to second by Bowles. With two away, junior Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) singled to right and Chatterton slid into home just ahead of the tag to tie the game at 4-4.
- Senior Michael Shanahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) pitched the final three innings and worked out of a pair of jams. He rolled three ground balls to sophomore Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) at second base in the ninth. H-SC had a leadoff double in the 10th, but a strikeout, a groundout and a lineout kept the runner from advancing. The Tigers put two on with one away in the top of the 11th before a flyout and a swinging strikeout ended the threat. Shanahan allowed two hits, did not walk a batter and fanned three to raise his record to 2-0.
- Chatterton had an infield single to short to begin the bottom of the 11th. Bowles beat out a bunt on the right side of the infield and Wernoski beat out a bunt on the left side of the infield to load the bases. Schmitt delivered a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Chatterton with the game-winning run.
