Late Game Execution Drives #22 Women's Hoops Past Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball used late game execution to run its win streak to nineteen, with a tough 59-52 road win at Randolph College. 

The Basics:

Score: #22 Randolph-Macon 59, Randolph 52           
Venue: Lynchburg, Va. // Frances and Don Giles Gym // Randolph College 
Records: Randolph-Macon (20-1, 13-0 ODAC), Randolph (10-12, 5-8 ODAC)

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon took an early 6-3, behind three different Yellow Jackets recording a basket in the first period. The WildCats saw Maddie Pabon knock down a three ball to tie up the game at 6-6, until Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudres) made a bucket to push the advantage back to the Lemon and Black at 8-6 with 5:25 on the clock. Both teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the period and the score would be 13-13 after the first ten minutes. 
  • In the second period, the score would be set at 15-15 with 7:06 on the clock. Randolph-Macon used four points by Smith to score six straight points and push the lead to 21-15 with 2:36 left in the period. Randolph got hot from behind the arc in the final two minutes, recording a trio of triples to finish the period on a 9-2 run and take a 24-23 lead into halftime. 
  • The Yellow Jackets were unable to find its groove from behind the arc and never got the deficit to less than four points in the first seven minutes of the third period. The WildCats held a 35-30 lead, following a Kylie Stark jump shot with 3:39 on the clock. Randolph-Macon fought back with a 6-0 run that was led by McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) with four points to take the lead back at 36-35 with 1:44 left in the period. The score was all tied up at 38-38 and Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) converted a layup with seconds left to give the Lemon and Black a 40-38 lead into the final ten minutes. 
  • In the fourth period, the lead would be in each teams grasp for the first five minutes and a Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) jumper would tie up the game at 48-48. Stark and the WildCats grabbed the lead back with two free throws with 4:21 on the clock and a advantage of 50-48. Matheny and Kagey helped Randolph-Macon outscore Randolph 11-3 the rest of the way and take home a tough 59-52 road victory. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 38.6 percent from the floor, as Randolph knocked down 39.6 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the WildCats 33-to-25 in the entire game. 
  • Kagey led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 16 points. The senior also added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • Matheny finished with 13 points, six rebounds and an assist. 
  • Smith recorded nine points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. 
  • Bruce scored eight points, pulled down two rebounds and blocked a shot. 
For the Record:
  • Head coach Lindsey Burke-Eberhart has surpassed her most wins in a season (20) at Randolph-Macon with the win today.
