Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Matheny's Double-Double Lifts #19 Women's Hoops to 20th Straight Win


ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball saw junior McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) record her fifth double-double of the season and helped the Yellow Jackets run its win streak to twenty, defeating Salisbury 67-50.  

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Salisbury started the game with two Abby Plaugher driving layups to jump ahead 4-0 within the first minute. The Yellow Jackets took the lead using five straight points that was capped off by a Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield). The Sea Gulls stuck around in the first period, staying within two possessions and trailed 15-13 with 4:07 left in the period. Randolph-Macon was able to stretch the lead out as much as six points and took a 21-15 lead into the second period.  
  • In the second period, Plaughter kept the Sea Gulls close with her play on the offensive end of the floor. Salisbury was able to cut the deficit to 24-20 with just over eight minutes left in the period. The Lemon and Black buckled down defensively and finished the final seven minutes of the period on a 9-3 run. The run was led by two three pointers by Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and sent Randolph-Macon into halftime with a 33-23 lead.  
  • The Yellow Jackets offense exploded in the third period, outscoring Salisbury 14-0 until Tori Rumbaugh made a layup with 3:44 on the clock. Matheny accounted for six of the fourteen points with her play in the post. Randolph-Macon was playing tough defense throughout the third period, holding the Sea Gulls to 16.67 percent shooting from the floor and taking a commanding 54-32 lead into the final ten minutes. 
  • In the fourth period, the Yellow Jackets were able to maintain their twenty point lead until the very end of the period. Randolph-Macon would use a strong third period to defeat Salisbury by a score of 67-50. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 51.9 percent from the floor, as Salisbury knocked down 31.4 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Sea Gulls 39-to-21 in the entire game. 
  • Matheny led the Yellow Jackets with another double-double performance. The junior scored 16 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, had five steals and a blocked shot.
  • Park was lethal from behind the arc (3-for-6) for a total of 13 points. The senior also recorded three steals and three assists. 
  • Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes), Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and Bruce all totaled nine points in the game. The trio combined for four three pointers and nine assists.
