Kagey Nets 1000th Point, #22 Women's Hoops Defeats BC


ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's basketball saw senior Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) score her 1,000th point in her career as a Yellow Jacket and helped guide women's hoops to its eighteenth straight win, defeating Bridgewater 74-65. 

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Bridgewater began the game by focusing on the inside game and playing the post, taking an early advantage at 6-4. Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) gave the Yellow Jackets its first lead of the game with a three-pointer at the 5:43 mark of the first period at 7-6. In the remainder of the period, both teams were trading baskets and the Eagles extended their lead to 13-9 with seconds on the clock. Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) made a driving layup through contact at the buzzer to give momentum back to Randolph-Macon, cutting the deficit to 13-11.  
  • In the second period, Bridgewater was back on the attack in the post and kept the lead at 16-13. McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) brought the Crenshaw crowd back into the game with a layup plus the foul shot to tie up the game at 16-16 with 7:32 left on the clock. Neither team gave much room for the other to grow a substantial lead throughout the period, until the Eagles knocked down a three ball to push the lead to 25-20 with 2:01 left in the period. Ten points were scored in the final two minutes of the period and a Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) three pointer with :16 seconds cut the deficit down to 30-26, going into halftime.  
  • The Lemon and Black came out of the locker room on fire on the offensive end to begin the third period. Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and Bruce knocked down back-to-back three balls in the first minute of the period, setting the score at 32-32. Bridgewater responded to the offensive explosion from the Yellow Jackets with a three pointer to tie up the game at 35-35 with 8:03 on the clock. Randolph-Macon conducted an 11-0 run that was started by a quick five point run by Ziegler and capped by a Park three ball to push the lead out to 46-35 with 4:38 left in the third period. The Eagles would respond with six straight points to end the period and cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 52-43.  
  • In the fourth period, the Lemon and Black were perfect from the field, scoring six points on three baskets to set the score at 59-46. Bridgewater answered the bell with three straight baskets to cut the deficit to 59-53 with 7:17 left in the game. Randolph-Macon never let the Eagles get any closer than that, throughout the remainder of the game, defeating Bridgewater 74-65. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 46.4 percent from the floor, as Bridgewater knocked down 38.9 percent of its shots. 
  • The Yellow Jackets and the Eagles both had 33 rebounds in the entire game. 
  • Kagey led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 17 points. The senior also added 13 rebounds and three assists.
  • Matheny finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and a steal. 
  • Bruce was lethal from behind the arc, shooting 4-of-7 on the evening. The sophomore scored 14 points and added a block and an assist.
  • Ziegler scored ten points and made two three balls for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) recorded seven points, seven assists and four rebounds.
