How it Happened
- Both sides split the first 12 points as the score was knotted 6-6 before RMC grabbed a 9-7 lead. VWU quickly tied the score at 10 but RMC ignited a 7-0 run that would give them control of the set. A pair of 3-0 runs by the Yellow Jackets helped them keep the pedal down, not letting the Marlins come back, as RMC took the opening frame 25-16.
- Another big run for RMC helped kickstart them in the second set, giving them an 8-4 lead. VWU responded by earning eight of the next 10 points to give the hosts a 12-10 advantage. The Marlins' lead extended to 18-14 after a 5-1 run and they held off RMC's late comeback attempt as the Yellow Jackets got it within two but couldn't complete the comeback. VWU took set two, 25-22.
- VWU doubled up RMC early in the third set, holding an 8-4 lead. RMC never found their footing in the set, as the lead slowly grew for the Marlins. A 3-0 run by the Jackets was able to cut the deficit to four at 21-17, but it wasn't enough as VWU took set three, 25-20.
- Caleb Crowther (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) started the fourth frame with back-to-back aces to give the Yellow Jackets a momentum boost. That momentum carried them out to a 13-4 lead as they had full control of the frame. Six points was as close as the score got the rest of the set, as RMC won six of the final seven points to win set four, 25-14, and force a deciding set five.
- After VWU took the first two points, RMC answered with the next three. The Marlins led 9-7 when a 3-0 run gave the Lemon and Black the lead. After the score was knotted at 11, RMC grabbed four of the final five points, finished with a kill by Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) to give the Yellow Jackets a come from behind victory.
