How it Happened
- On the first two possessions of the game, Catholic took the first four points before a driving layup from Porter got the Yellow Jackets' scoring started. Then, over the next two minutes and 20 seconds, the Cardinals assembled a 6-2 run to get out to a 10-4 lead with 6:01 remaining in the quarter. Porter then started to take over, getting her squad back to a 12-12 tie with 3:18 left in the first after nailing a layup and two triples. Riley White (Hamilton, Va./Virginia Academy) hit her first three on the following possession, giving RMC its first lead of the contest, with 2:45 left. For the remainder of the frame, the Lemon and Black held the Cardinals scoreless to enter the second quarter up, 16-12.
- Catholic's Lauren Kraft sank two three pointers in the first 2:30 to get her team back within one, down 19-20. Then, White laced her second shot from distance of the half to extend RMC's lead to 23-19 with 6:37 remaining. Although neither program scored again until there were less than five minutes remaining, McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) grabbed three rebounds in the span to continue to provide her team with scoring opportunities. Despite the Cardinals creating a 27-24 lead with 2:17 left in the half, free throws from Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes), Madison Langdon (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) and Matheny, as well Porter's third three of the game, gave the Yellow Jackets a 32-28 advantage at the break.
- Randolph-Macon extended its lead to 40-31 under four minutes into the third after Porter drilled her fourth three of the contest, followed by midrange buckets from Matheny and Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa County). RMC then built its lead to 45-32 thanks to a pull up jump shot from Smith and driving layup from Porter, giving her 20 points on the afternoon. While Catholic got back within single digits, down 36-45 with 3:24 left in the third, Porter nailed her career-high fifth three of the game to keep her team up, 49-36. With 50 seconds left, the Lemon and Black forced the Cardinals' 19th turnover of the game, leading to a 49-38 lead after three frames of play.
- While the Cardinals hit a three to open the scoring in the fourth, Porter continued to shoot the lights out, as she responded with her sixth three of the game to keep the Lemon and Black up, 52-41 with 7:54 remaining. The next minute saw Matheny find her groove, as she sank back-to-back layups, extending RMC's lead to 56-44. With 4:52 left in the contest, Catholic got the closest its been since the first quarter, as the Cardinals sank a combination of free throws and layups to get down 49-56. In the closing minutes of the game, Matheny, Smith and Porter all hit free throws to help Randolph-Macon secure a 68-57 victory.
