How it Happened
- In the opening 15 minutes, both teams traded possessions while trying to gain the upper hand over the other. In the 16th minute, Lauren Orner and Makayla Hargrove capitalized on a costly turnover in the defensive half by Erin Morris (Manchester, N.H./Bishop Guertin), slotting the first goal of the match to gain a 1-0 lead.
- Just three minutes later, Caroline Blanchard (Virginia Beach, Va./ Frank W. Cox) had an opportunity to grab the equalizer. However, the Hornets' keeper Kate Shepard made an outstanding save to keep the advantage. Alexa Stohr (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) and Natalie Moxey (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) had two more chances to level the match; however, they could not capitalize and the Yellow Jackets went into halftime trailing 1-0.
- Immediately out of halftime, RMC pressured offensively as they looked to tie the match with shots from Stohr and Ariel Farmer (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill). The equalizing goal came in the 59th minute when Farmer made an outstanding individual play, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
- The Yellow Jackets continued to excel offensively, as Ally Spangler (Daleville, Va./Lord Botetourt) had a shot 40 seconds later that connected with the post, nearly giving RMC the lead. In the 65th minute of the match, Stohr took a shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar and ricocheted to Spangler, who was in the perfect position to finish the goal, giving the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead.
