Men's Volleyball Dominates Double Dip at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – Randolph-Macon Men's Volleyball posted two strong showings in a double dip of matches against Averett on Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets swept the Cougars in both matches, starting conference play 1-0.

How it Happened (Match 1)
  • Averett came out strong in the first set, jumping out to a 7-5 lead. RMC found their footing with a 9-2 run that gave the Yellow Jackets a big lead, 14-9. Averett kept the score within striking distance but couldn't get within four points. RMC led 19-15 before winning six of the final seven points to take the opening set, 25-16.
  • Both sides traded points to open the second stanza, as the score was knotted at eight before RMC broke it open with a 5-0 run to make the score 13-8. After Averett kept it close for a while, another spurt by the Yellow Jackets fueled the rest of the set as they cruised to the finish line of a 25-15 set two win.
  • The Yellow Jackets commanded the third set from the start, breaking open an 8-2 lead. After AU stopped the run, RMC started firing on all cylinders once again. 10 of the next 11 points went in favor of the Jackets and then later had a 5-0 run as RMC ran away with the set, 25-9.
Inside the Numbers (Match 1)
  • RMC hit a staggering .410 in the match, compared to just .098 for the Cougars.
  • Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) led the team with 13 kills and hit .550 in the match. He also had two aces and a block assist.
  • Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) totaled 34 assists for over 11 assists per set. He filled the stat sheet with four aces, one solo block, three block assists, and six digs.
  • Bryce Matthews (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) registered 10 kills and hit .368.
  • Nick Futrell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) finished with five kills on five swings.
How it Happened (Match 2)
  • The Yellow Jackets dominated the opening set from the start, holding an 11-5 lead. AU took two of the next three points, but RMC picked up where they left off, igniting a 7-0 run to push the lead to double digits at 19-7. Both teams alternated points the rest of the set as RMC rolled to an opening set win, 25-12.
  • The second frame was more of the same. RMC pushed out an early lead by taking a 12-7 advantage. The Cougars took the next two points, but momentum flipped back to the Yellow Jackets' side with five of the next six points going their way. RMC held Averett to just five points the rest of the set as RMC dominated again, 25-15, to move within one set of the sweep.
  • Averett kept the third set close in the opening stages, trailing by just one point at 10-9. A 5-0 run for the Jackets ensued to tilt momentum in their favor, but Averett came right back with five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to three at 17-14. RMC rallied again to only allow Averett to grab three more points the rest of the set, as RMC won set three, 25-17.
Inside the Numbers (Match 2)
  • Davis Luck (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) led the team with a career-high 16 kills on a .536 hitting percentage. Luck also had two aces and five digs.
  • Seneca Gibson (Chicago, Ill./Preparatory Academy) and Tyler DeMerritt (Rota, Spain/David G. Farragut) each had a career-best six kills. DeMerritt added two aces to hit stat line as well.
  • Thomas Eubank (Henrico, Va./Mills Godwin) posted a career-high 29 assist and two block assists.
  • Matteo DeLuca (Glen Allen, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) finished with five digs and three aces.
  • RMC totaled 11 aces and 10 block assists in the match, while hitting .302.

  • Randolph-Macon will travel to Washington, D.C. for two matches on Saturday against Immaculata at noon and Gallaudet at 2:00 p.m.
