Thach, White Both Score in Home Opener Against Catholic

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Field Hockey battled Catholic to the tune of a 3-2 loss in overtime in the home opener on Wednesday.
Score: Catholic 3, Randolph-Macon 2 (OT)
Venue: Nunally Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (1-1), Catholic (1-1)
How it Happened
  • Randolph-Macon controlled much of the possession in the first quarter but both sides had some chances early on. The Cardinals were able to tally the first goal of the game with under two minutes to go in the frame but were swiftly answered by Ashlyn White (Frederick, Md./Urbana) to knot the score at one heading to the second quarter.
  • The second stanza was evenly matched as both teams tallied four shots and the goalkeepers combined for seven saves, but the game went into the halftime break still tied at one.
  • Catholic was awarded 11 corners in the third quarter and put up 10 shots, helping them push one across with just over three minutes left in the frame. RMC's defense held strong as Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) totaled eight saves in the period to keep it at a 2-1 deficit.
  • Those saves became magnified when Llana Thach (Henrico, Va./Glen Allen) scored a goal two minutes into the fourth quarter to tie the score at three. It seemed all the momentum shifted to RMC's side but the Cardinals held strong through three RMC corners to send the game to overtime.
  • In the extra period, both teams had initial chances, but it was Catholic who found the back of the cage six minutes in to come out victorious.
Inside the Numbers
