8/2/2024 3:36:00 PM

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon College Director of Athletics Jeff Burns has announced that Kevin Proffitt, head softball coach, has resigned after 22 seasons with the Yellow Jackets.

Taking over the program before the 2002 season, Proffitt accumulated a dazzling record of 533-283-4 (.652) overall and a 221-158 (.583) mark in conference play. His 533 wins placed him 31st among active division III softball coaches at the end of 2024, a season in which the Yellow Jackets went 33-7-2 and 20-2 in ODAC play, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in as many full seasons, dating back to 2017.

In 2013, Proffitt and the Yellow Jackets entered the National Poll for the first time, being ranked No. 22 in the NFCA Top 25. In 2015, Proffitt led the Yellow Jackets to their first of seven NCAA Tournament appearances, defeating Ramapo, 8-6, in the program's first ever NCAA Tournament game. RMC would finish as the runner up in the 2015 Newport News Regional. Randolph-Macon would begin their run of six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2017, going 35-11 and was selected to host a regional for the first time.

After a 2018 season that saw the Yellow Jackets reach 40 wins for the first time in program history, RMC would mark yet another first in the 2019 season. Proffitt guided RMC to a 30-17 record, earning a bid to a regional, and ultimately winning their way to the Division III Softball College World Series in Tyler, Texas.

After the shortened seasons in 2020 and 2021, Proffitt and the Yellow Jackets picked up where they left off, with another NCAA Tournament appearance. They would host a regional in Ashland and advanced to Super Regionals for the second time. In 2023, after hosting another regional in Ashland, the Yellow Jackets were selected to host the first Super Regional in the Center of the Universe. They would finish that season with 43 wins, the most in program history.

Proffitt ends his tenure with seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last seven chances and a record of 405-147-4 (.728) since 2011.

Over 22 years, Proffitt coached two ODAC Player of the Years, two ODAC Pitcher of the Years, three ODAC Rookie of the Years, and five NFCA All-Americans. He was named 2007 ODAC Coach of the Year, 2019 VaSID State Coach of the Year, and led RMC to two ODAC Championships, seven NCAA Regional appearances, two Super Regional appearances, and one College World Series appearance. He was also honored as Randolph-Macon's Hugh Stephens Coach of the Year for the entire Athletic Department in 2012 and 2013, as voted by fellow coaches in the department.

"Kevin's coaching record and level of success turning this program into a regional and national powerhouse place him amongst the most successful coaches in RMC history," said Burns. "He deserves to be recognized in the RMC Hall of Fame and I look forward to presenting his resume to the nomination committee for induction."

The 1986 graduate of Randolph-Macon leaves as the most successful coach in program history, paving the way for Randolph-Macon Softball for years to come.
