Ray Hedrick was named the ODAC Coach of the Year as the conference office announced its award winners and All-ODAC teams.
Sophomore
Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) was All-ODAC First Team as designated hitter for RMC.
All-ODAC Second Team Yellow Jackets were junior
Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) as relief pitcher and freshman
Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) as utility player.
RMC All-ODAC Third Team members were senior shortstop
Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello), sophomore starting pitcher
Colin Casey (Herndon, Va./South Lakes), and freshman outfielder
Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga).
Hedrick led the Yellow Jackets to a 28-11 overall record. RMC won the ODAC regular-season title with a 16-6 conference mark after being voted third in the preseason poll. The Yellow Jackets are No. 19 in the ABCA poll and No. 21 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25. Hedrick became the winningest coach in program history earlier this season and has 485 victories in 20 seasons as head coach at RMC. This is the fourth time Hedrick has been ODAC Coach of the Year, receiving the honor in 2008, 2018 and 2019. It is the eighth time an RMC coach has earned the recognition. Hugh Stephens was ODAC Coach of the Year in 1979, while Gregg Water was ODAC Coach of the Year in 1984, 1987 and 1995.
Schmitt batted .357 in 21 conference games with 30 hits, six doubles, one triple, one homer, 19 runs and 24 RBI. He drew 12 walks and was hit by five pitches for an on-base percentage of .461. Overall, Schmitt batted .351 in 35 games with 47 hits, nine doubles, three triples, two homers, 32 runs and 37 RBI.
Slevin led the ODAC with a program-record 10 overall saves and five in conference contests. Those 10 saves are the second-highest total in the nation. He went 2-1 in 12 league games and had 21 strikeouts in 18.2 innings. Slevin had 20 total appearances with an ERA of 2.30. He fanned 34 in 27.1 innings.
Wernoski hit .427 in 22 league contests with 35 hits, 25 runs, four doubles, three triples, one home run and 29 RBI. He had 13 walks and was hit by eight pitches for an on-base percentage of .533. Wernoski was 8 for 9 on stolen bases. Overall, Wernoski reached base in all 36 games in which he played. He batted .392 with 51 hits, 38 runs and 36 RBI.
Bush batted .370 in 21 ODAC games with an on-base percentage of .441. He had 27 hits, 20 runs, one double, two homers and 22 RBI. Bush was 13-13 on stolen base attempts. His fielding percentage was .979. Bush hit .307 overall in 36 games with 35 hits, 34 runs, three homers and 30 RBI. He is third in program history with 99 career walks.
Casey posted a 3-0 record in seven conference games and six starts with an ERA of 3.60. He fanned 21 with 25.0 innings. ODAC opponents batted .267 against Casey. In 12 overall appearances, Casey struck out 39 in 38.1 innings.
Quici batted .342 in 22 conference contests with an on-base percentage of .536. He had 25 hits, 31 runs, four doubles, three triples and 10 RBI. Quici amassed 24 walks and was hit by 10 pitches. In 38 overall games, Quici batted .308 with an on-base percentage of .495. He reached base in 37 of 38 games. Quici walked 38 times, second in the ODAC and 10th in the nation. It was the fourth-highest total in program history.
RMC advanced to the second weekend of the ODAC Championship with a four-team double elimination format to determine the conference champion. The top-seeded Yellow Jackets will face fourth-seeded Lynchburg on Thursday, May 9, at 1 p.m. at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
