RMC Baseball Sweeps ODAC Doubleheader from Guilford

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon baseball team extended its win streak to five in a sweep of an ODAC doubleheader with Guilford on Sunday afternoon.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 7-14, Guilford 3-1
Venue: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park

How It Happened: Game 1
  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the first. Freshman Jon Quici (Philadelphia, Pa./Conestoga) had a leadoff double and scored on an error for an early 1-0 lead.
  • RMC put up a crooked number in the third. Sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) had a one-out single and went to third on a double by junior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley). Schmitt came home when senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) reached on an error with two away. After Webb went to second on a wild pitch, he and Lautenschlager scored on a base hit by freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) as the lead grew to 4-0.
  • After the Quakers got one back in the fourth, sophomore Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) followed a two-out triple by Wernoski with his first homer of the season as RMC led 6-1.
  • Quici had a leadoff single in the sixth and scored on a double by Lautenschlager to push the advantage to 7-1. Guilford tallied two in the eighth to make the final 7-3.
By The Numbers
  • Sophomore Colin Casey (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) earned the win, going 5.0 innings with four hits, one run, one walk and one strikeout to level his record at 1-1.
  • Senior Patrick Routsis (Midlothian, Va./St. Christopher's) earned his first save of the season, allowing two hits and fanning eight over the final four innings.
  • Quici went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs.
  • Wernoski was 2 for 4 with a triple, one run and two RBI.
  • Duff also had two RBI.
  • Schmitt and Lautenschlager both had two hits.
How It Happened: Game 2
  • The Quakers plated one in the top of the first before the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the second. Sophomore Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had an RBI single to knock in Wernoski and a sacrifice fly by Quici brought home senior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) as RMC went up 2-1.
  • Webb singled in the third and scored on a base hit by senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) to make it 3-1.
  • RMC blew the game open with eight in the fourth. Schmitt had a single and scored the second run of the rally before delivering a sacrifice fly later in the frame to drive in the final run of the inning to make the score 11-1.
  • Webb had a leadoff double in the fifth and scored on a single by Wernoski to increase the lead to 12-1.
  • Junior Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) added a pinch-hit two-run single in the seventh that made the final 14-1.
By The Numbers
  • Senior Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) was the starter and winner, going five innings with three hits, one run and four strikeouts to raise his record to 3-0.
  • Four relievers worked a hitless inning each. Senior Jacob Lawler (Broad Run, Va./Battlefield) pitched the sixth with one strikeout. Senior Cole Stamm (Irvington, Va./Middlesex) fanned two in the seventh. Junior Gavin Tomlin (Capron, Va./Camp CC) pitched the eighth and sophomore William Wian (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) hurled a perfect ninth.
  • RMC has double-figure hits in seven straight games and nine of the past 10 contests.
  • The Yellow Jackets are 11-0 when leading after seven innings.
  • Webb went 4 for 4 with a double, three runs and one RBI. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
  • Quici, Pinto, Bush and Brooks all knocked in two.
  • Quici has reached base in 16 straight games.
  • Wernoski had reached base in 15 consecutive games.
  • Schmitt had two hits.
  • Wernoski and Myers both scored twice.
