ASHLAND, Va. - The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team saw
Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) lead the way in overtime and scored 23 points, sending the Yellow Jackets over #6 Johns Hopkins 75-74.

How it Happened:
- Johns Hopkins grabbed the early lead, after Macie Feldman converted on a mid-range jump shot to push the lead to 6-3 with 7:12 remaining in the first period. The Yellow Jackets rattled off three consecutive baskets to push ahead with a 9-6 lead with 5:20 left. Both teams battled for the next three minutes and Greta Miller made a lay up with 2:50 left to tie up the game at 11-11. Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) scored five of the final ten points of the period for Randolph-Macon, totalling ten points in the first ten minutes. The Lemon and Black would use the play of Ziegler to take a 21-17 lead into the second period.
- In the second period, Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) knocked down a three-pointer to begin play to give Randolph-Macon its biggest lead of the game at 24-17. The Blue Jays would stick around throughout the period and never let the deficit get larger than seven. Kagey made a lay up with 3:16 left to push the Yellow Jacket lead to 34-29. Johns Hopkins scored the next five points, capped off by a Feldman free throw to tie up the game at 34-34 with :32 seconds left in the first half. McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) made a two point shot with a second left on the clock to push momentum to Randolph-Macon heading into halftime with a 36-34 lead.
- To start the third period, each team traded baskets to begin the period and Greta Miller made a lay up to bring Johns Hopkins within one point. The Lemon and Black saw Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and Kagey rattle off five points in the next fifteen seconds to push the lead back to six points at 44-38. The Blue Jays took a much needed timeout and came out of it with aggression, conducting a 10-0 run, capped off by a Michaela O'Neil made shot to give them a 48-44 lead with 4:48 left. Johns Hopkins found its groove in the third period and with a Greta Miller lay up with :33 seconds, the biggest lead of the game for the Blue Jays would be the ending score in the period at 55-48.
- Randolph-Macon would use the energy of the home crowd in Crenshaw Gym to its advantage to begin the fourth period. Park and Kagey used their senior leadership and led the Yellow Jackets on a 9-2 run in the first four minutes of the final period, ending with a Kagey basket to tie up the game at 57-57. The Blue Jays built their lead back with six straight points out of a timeout and with 3:47 left had a 63-57 lead. Park and Kagey again would put the team on their backs, both scoring the next eight points and Park nailed a three ball with 1:08 left in the period to tie up the game at 65-65. Randolph-Macon had two great looks to potentially win the game in the final seconds, but Johns Hopkins held tough to force overtime with the score locked at 65-65.
- Kagey was a force all game for the Yellow Jackets and that would not change in the overtime period. The senior scored eight of the ten points for Randolph-Macon, including the final six points of the game. The Blue Jays turned the ball over in their final possession and never had a chance for the game winning shot. Randolph-Macon used its veteran leadership to pull off the 75-74 upset over Johns Hopkins.
Inside the Numbers:
- Johns Hopkins shot 46.9 percent from the floor, as Randolph-Macon knocked down 44.4 percent of its shots.
- The Blue Jays outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 44-to-33 in the entire game.
- Kagey recorded a season high with 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor. The senior also pulled down eight rebounds, assisted four baskets, added two steals and blocked a shot.
- Park ended the night with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. The senior was 3-for-8 from behind the arc.
- Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) and Ziegler both had 12 points for the Yellow Jackets in the game.
- Matheny scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench for Randolph-Macon.
For the Record:
- The win is the third against a nationally ranked team in the Lindsey Burke-Eberhart era.
- Park moved her career three point total to 142, passing Sarah Parsons'15 for seventh all-time in Randolph-Macon women's basketball history.
