Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrude's) and
McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) both tallied 15 points as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated Marymount 71-53 on Tuesday evening.

How it Happened:
- The teams stayed within three points of each other through the first seven minutes. The Saints hit a three-pointer to take a 12-11 lead before a layup by Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) sparked a 9-0 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 20-12 with 1:12 left in the first period. MU had the final bucket of the quarter as RMC led 20-14 after one period.
- Matheny and Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) had the first two baskets of the second quarter as the advantage grew to 24-14 one minute in the period. Following a bucket by the Saints, Smith converted a three-point play to push the lead to 27-16 with 8:25 remaining. A layup by Matheny gave the home team a 15-point advantage at 35-20 with 4:10 left. MU tallied the final seven points of the period to trail 35-27 at intermission.
- Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) sank a pair of free throws and assisted on a layup by Smith as the lead moved to 39-27 three minutes into the third quarter. Layups by Matheny and Smith preceded a triple by Matheny as the advantage ballooned to 51-33 with one minute left in the period. MU scored four of the final six points in the quarter as RMC took a 53-37 lead to the final quarter.
- The Saints started the fourth period on a 6-3 spurt before a Matheny layup and a trey by Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) made it 61-43 with 4:30 remaining. A three-pointer by Brielle Baughman (East Berlin, Pa./Delone Catholic) gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 69-48 with 1:15 left before posting the 71-53 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- RMC hit 45% from the floor and held MU to 38% shooting. Matheny went 7 for 9 on field goals and hit her lone three-point attempt.
- The Yellow Jackets had a 38-16 advantage on points in the paint, 21-5 edge in second-chance points and 31-10 in bench points.
- Smith registered a season high with 15 points.
- The Yellow Jackets also shot 45% from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 20 three-pointers.
- RMC had a 39-29 advantage on the glass. Kagey led all players with 10 caroms and was one point away from a double-double.
- Smith dished out six assists, matching her season high. Kagey and Bruce both had three assists, a season high for Bruce.
- Matheny led the RMC defense with three steals, while Smith and Kagey both recorded two.
For the Record:
- RMC snapped a two-game losing streak to MU and recorded its first win over the Saints since 2017.
