Strong First Half Gives Field Hockey 3-2 Win on Senior Day

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon field hockey uses a strong first half to top Roanoke 3-2, securing the four-seed in the ODAC tournament.
Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Roanoke 2
Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Randolph-Macon College/Nunnally Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (11-6, 6-3 ODAC), Roanoke (6-9, 4-5 ODAC)
How it Happened
  • RMC started quick and strong in their offensive zone in the first quarter. Less than halfway through the frame, Llana Thach (Henrico, Va./Glen Allen) sent a reverse flip across the goal mouth where Emma Landis (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) was able to find the back of the cage to take the early lead.
  • Just over two minutes after putting their first tally on the board, the Yellow Jackets struck again when Alaina McCoy (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) generated a strong offensive play and sent a pass to Mackenzie Wunderlich (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal) who secured the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets continued the pressure throughout the second quarter, leading Roanoke College in shots 7-3 heading into halftime.
  • The Maroons started the third quarter strong and generated two quick penalty corners. Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) registered a save on both penalty corners to keep the Yellow Jackets ahead by two.
  • RMC extended their lead to three when Emma Landis continued her scoring streak three minutes into the third quarter off a dish from Alaina McCoy. Roanoke was able to respond toward the end of the third quarter making the score 3-1 heading into the final frame.
  • Both teams generated chances throughout the fourth quarter, including a penalty stroke opportunity for the Maroons. Roanoke cashed in on the stroke to shorten RMC's lead to one. RMC closed out the final minutes dominating possession to secure the important ODAC win.
Inside the Numbers
  • Emma Landis' two goals made for a four-goal week for the senior. Landis now has five goals on the season, tying Isabella McNulty and Mia Kuhnle for second on the team.
  • Alaina McCoy's two assists gives her 11 assists on the season, which is first on the team and ties for first in the ODAC. She now has 23 points on the year.
  • Mackenzie Wunderlich's goal was her first on the year and second straight game registering a point.
For the Record
  • With the 11th win on the year, the Yellow Jackets have the most wins in a season during Jess Weiss' tenure and the most wins for the program since 2013 where the Yellow Jackets went 11-10.
