Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) worked 7.0 innings with four hits, no earned runs and 10 strikeouts as the 24th-ranked and third-seeded Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision in 12 innings to sixth-seeded Roanoke on Sunday afternoon in Game 1 of the ODAC Championship Quarterfinal Series.
The Basics
Score: Roanoke 8, Randolph-Macon 4 (12)
Venue: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park
Records: R-MC 26-11, RC 23-14
How It Happened:
- The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the third. Sophomore Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a two-out single, moved to third when sophomore Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) reached on an error, and scored on a wild pitch to give R-MC a 1-0 edge.
- In the top of the fourth, Bush made an outstanding backhand stop at short and gunned out the leadoff hitter at first.
- With two away in the top of the seventh, the Maroons used an error and a homer to take a 2-1 lead.
- R-MC would tie the game in the eighth. Myers had a leadoff single and was erased at second when junior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) singled to move Iannuzzi to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and sophomore Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Iannuzzi, leveling the score at 2-2.
- After sophomore Cole Stamm (Irvington, Va./Middlesex) retired the side in order in the top of the eighth, he surrendered a long hit high of the fence in left field to lead off the inning. Iannuzzi played the ball perfectly and threw out the runner at second. Stamm struck out the next two hitters to keep the game tied.
- In the bottom of the ninth, freshman Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) had a one-out single and moved to second when Bush was plunked with two away. A diving catch in left on a liner off the bat of Myers sent the game into extra innings.
- Stamm allowed a two-out double in the top of the 10th but fanned the next hitter to keep the game deadlocked. Cole drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the frame and went to second on a base hit by Webb. Both moved up one base on a wild pitch and the Maroons elected to walk senior Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) intentionally to load the bases. A double play would send the game to the 11th.
- Sophomore Cole Snead (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) set RC down in order in the top of the 11th, with Pietruszynski making a diving catch in right to keep the Maroons off the bases.
- Junior Logan Smith (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) and Bush had consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the 11th, but a strikeout and a lineout kept it tied.
- RC scored six times in the top of the 12th. Freshman Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to make the final 8-4.
