Venue: Williams Gymnasium
Records: Randolph-Macon 12-5, Carolina 3-9
How It Happened
- The opening set featured back-and-forth play until the Yellow Jackets started to pull away after they tied the game at 14-all. A 5-1 rally bookended by a pair of kills by Scotty Carter (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) gave the Lemon and Black the lead for good. Even though the hosts staved off a potential game point on consecutive plays, Carter's high school teammate Merrick Gessler (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) eventually secured the win with a kill.
- A 5-0 stretch by the Lemon and Black near a similar time helped R-MC pull away once again in the second. Carter chalked up another kill to make the score 14-12 to kickstart the run before he went up for a solo block on the second point which forced the Bruins to call timeout. Carolina made a run late with a 7-3 stretch before Sean Cunningham (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) closed out the game and gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead with a kill.
- The closest game of the night was the third and provided Carolina its best opportunity to take a set. Both teams had multiple chances at game point with the hosts getting the first crack at it, but a Mitchell Wyatt (Fr., Prince George, Va. / Prince George) kill evened things up for the Yellow Jackets. Jarrett Carrano (Jr., Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry) kept R-MC alive once again with a kill to tie the set at 26-all. The teams exchanged points before the Jackets put the match away on a block by Cade Terrell (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) and Cunningham.
Inside The Numbers
- Carrano led the attack with a match-best 16 kills, a new career-high in three set matches and just two shy of matching his personal best regardless of games. Terrell set up the offense with 31 assists. Together both Carrano and Terrell led with nine digs.
- Cuningham continued to be a force up front defensively with six blocks on the evening. Three of them were by himself. Terrell and Carter both had three total.
- Defensively the Jackets limited the Bruins' opportunities and allowed them to hit just .019 for the match. Carolina hit in the negatives for the first two sets and were led by two players with eight kills.
