How It Happened (Match 1 vs. Arcadia)
- A 10-2 rally that started in the middle of the first set put the Yellow Jackets in the commander's seat to give them a 22-16 lead en route to the win. Six of the 10 points were on R-MC attacks with three of those during that stretch coming from Andrew Klein (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen).
- After the Knights equalized in the second game, the Lemon and Black used another late set rally to take the third set and a 2-1 advantage. A couple of kills by Jarrett Carrano (Jr., Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry) sparked a 5-0 run to put the Jackets up 21-14. Another Carrano kill followed by a Sean Cunningham (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) spike put the game away.
- The third set saw the Jackets jump out to a 12-2 lead, but despite the early advantage Arcadia made Randolph-Macon work for the win. The Knights responded with nine of the next 10 points before the Jackets followed with a 6-2 run to make it 19-13. The momentum pendulum swung once again as Arcadia answered with an 8-2 rally to tie the game at 21-all.
- The Knights eventually served for game point at 24-23, but a Carrano kill equaled things up once again. Although the Jackets couldn't put the match away after splitting the next two points, Carrano put down another attack before a block by Cade Terrell (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) and Cunningham sealed the win with a 27-25 decision in the fourth set.
Inside The Numbers
- Klein and Carrano were outstanding and combined for 25 kills. Klein tallied 15 of them and hit .355 on 31 attempts. Carrano's 10 were on 16 swings for a percentage of .438. Klein also led the team on the receiving end with seven digs.
- Cunningham scored 11 points on eight kills, an ace, and four blocks. None was more important than the final one, but he also had to solo shutdowns as well.
- Terrell set up the offense with 34 assists.
- For the Knights, Collin Nissley led the team with 10 kills.
How It Happened (Match 2 vs. Widener)
- The Yellow Jackets had to do something in this match that they haven't had to do yet this season. That was come from behind. After winning so many close sets the past two days, the Pride eventually got the Jackets' number and took a 1-0 lead with a 27-25 win in the first.
- The Pride almost made it a 2-0 lead by serving for game point in the second at 24-22, but Randolph-Macon stayed alive in a big way with a kill from Daniel Nguyen (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen), a kill by Klein, and a James Manning (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) ace to take a 25-24 lead. After Widener scored the next point, Nguyen spiked down his next attack before a Pride error gave the Jackets the win.
- The Jackets proceeded to take the match lead with their best set of the afternoon. R-MC racked up 15 kills on 26 attempts for a hitting percentage of .462. Two more points came on blocks, one from the combined efforts of Manning and Gio DeLuca (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen), and the final point of the game on a rejection from Carter and Cunningham.
- In the fourth set, R-MC used an 8-2 rally to take a 13-8 lead. Widener couldn't cut the deficit to less than four or put together a rally of three straight-points the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Klein again clobbered the volleyball for 14 kills to give him 29 on the day. He averaged 14.67 over the weekend.
- Kolby Gibson (Jr., Bumpass, Va. / Louisa) hit double figures once again with 11 kills. Carter added 10.
- John Saxman (So., Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) picked up 10 digs to lead the defense on the receiving end. Cunningham was strong up front with five blocks.
- After limiting Arcadia and Widener to hitting percentages of .05 and .048, respectively, the Yellow Jackets are now fourth in the nation in opponent hitting percentage at .053.
