Defense Shines as R-MC Field Hockey Blanks SMC

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior goalkeeper Gatlin Snyder (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) recorded nine saves, including two in the final three minutes, as the Randolph-Macon field hockey team shut out St. Mary's (Md.) 2-0 on Wednesday evening.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 2, St. Mary's (Md.) 0

Venue: Ashland, Va. (Nunnally Field)

Records: R-MC 2-2, SMC 2-3

How It Happened

  • After each team had a shot on goal in the first seven minutes of the game, senior Maria-Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity) tallied her fifth goal of the season nine minutes into the contest on an assist by freshman Mia Kuhnle (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) as the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead. R-MC had a 3-2 advantage in shots in the first period and both teams had a pair of shots on goal.
  • The Seahawks had all three shots that came in the second quarter, including two on goal, but could not score. Snyder had four saves in the first half, two in each quarter.
  • R-MC kept the ball in its offensive end at the start of the third period. Freshman Alaina McCoy (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) scored in front of the cage on a pass from sophomore Anna Stribling (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 edge. It was the first career goal for McCoy. SMC had three shots in the period and two on goal but was still kept off the scoreboard. R-MC scored on its lone shot of the quarter.
  • SMC kept the pressure on throughout the fourth period. The Seahawks had an 8-1 advantage on shots and had eight penalty corners, including six in the final four minutes. But the Yellow Jacket defense turned back each assault to claim the 2-0 victory.

By The Numbers

  • R-MC registered its second straight shutout and the third in regulation in the first four games of the season. Snyder combined with defenders that included senior Sydney Duimstra (Montpelier, Va./Deep Run), junior Tori Mumm (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) and junior Annika Egerland (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) to keep the Seahawks off the board.
  • SMC had a 16-5 edge in shots and 13-3 on penalty corners.
  • Snyder had at least two saves in each period.
  • Ambrogi-Torres recorded her 40th career goal. That total stands sixth on R-MC's career goals list.
