Averna Scores Twice As Men's Lacrosse Falls In Quarterfinals

Box Score

(HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va.) – The season came to a close for the Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse team as it fell to nationally ranked No. 14/16 Hampden-Sydney in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament.

The Score: No. 6 Randolph-Macon 5, No. 3 Hampden-Sydney 14

Venue: Everett Stadium

Records: R-MC 6-8, H-SC 12-2

How It Happened

  • Hampden-Sydney opened up the scoring with the first two goals in the opening five minutes, but Randolph-Macon was able to answer and tie it up midway through the first quarter. Bubba Bowen (Fr., Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) was the first to light up the scoreboard, and Jack Smith (Fr., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) followed with the equalizer on an assist from Brandon Smith (Jr., Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman).
  • The Tigers responded with the next two goals to close the first up 4-2. That score remained the same for a lengthy period of time as there was a weather delay that stopped play.
  • Once play resumed, Jack Averna (Jr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier) scored on a helper from Ryan Pritchard (Fr., Crofton, Md. / DeMatha) to bring the Yellow Jackets within one at 4-3. It ended up being the only score of the second period.
  • After halftime, Hampden-Sydney took control with a 5-0 run after outshooting the Jackets 13-3. That run extended 9-0 to make the score 13-3 until Averna scored on an assist from Cameron Foti (So., Annandale, Va. / Annandale) with 5:55 to go.
  • The hosts added a late goal with 16 seconds left, but the Jackets answered six seconds later as Jack Silvernale (Sr., Warrenton, Va. / Highland) won the ensuing faceoff and raced down to score the final goal of the game.

Inside The Numbers

  • Harris Archer (So., Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's) got the start and played a majority of the game between the pipes. He did well as he made 13 saves on 44 shots faced. It was his third game of the season and second consecutive with at least 13 saves.
  • Three of the saves came during the second quarter in which the Yellow Jackets didn't yield a goal to the Tigers.
  • The second quarter marked the first time the Yellow Jackets shutout the opposition since the first quarter against Randolph. It was one of five Randolph-Macon had during the season.
  • Silvernale led the team with six ground balls. Archer was second on the team with five.
  • This was the fourth consecutive season that the Yellow Jackets made the postseason.
